My Brother Had Been Married for Five Years, Yet We Had Never Met His Wife—Then He Said They’d Be Staying with Me for Two Days. They Arrived, and I Couldn’t Stand That Woman for a Minute

My brother, William, moved to another city for work after finishing university. His plan was quite simple: live there for a year, save up, and return to our hometown to buy a flat. But fate has a cheeky way of changing plans, doesnt it? While he was away, William met a girl and eventually decided to marry her. And just like that, he stayed in the new city. None of us knew his wife. As it happened, during their wedding I was heavily pregnant, about to give birth any day, so it was clear I wouldnt be going anywhere. Dad couldnt get time off work either, so only Mum made it to the wedding. She barely got to know Williams new wifejust the brief pleasantries really. They went off on their honeymoon, and Mum came back a few days later. Mum said the girl was lovelypretty, always smiling, and pleasant enough. Several years went by, and the rest of us never met my sister-in-law.
But this year, William shared some grand news. Hed planned a busy trip around the country. First, he and his wife would come see us. Then theyd head off to a mates wedding, pop by his old school reunion, meet Mum and Dad at the seaside, and eventually head back home. They were to stay with us for two days. I didnt think thered be any issues. Granted, our flat is small, but my in-laws have a summer cottage outside of town that we could use. My mother-in-law was happy to let us stay there. It hadnt been done up in ages, mind you, but it offered decent enough comfort.
That day, I was genuinely in good spirits, looking forward to their visit. When they arrived, thats when things started to unravel. William made introductions, and from the very first moment, my sister-in-law began to complain. She moaned about being too hot and cramped on the journey, everything being noisy or uncomfortable, and so on.
When we reached the summer house, I thought itd be nice to give them a little tour. The look my sister-in-law gave the bathroom and shower was something elselike she’d been kissed by a stray dog. She pulled William aside and whispered, then before I knew it, William was asking my husband if he could drive them back into town. My sister-in-law declared she simply wasnt going to use that shower. They came back to ours, she freshened up, spent ages on her make-up, and then returned to the cottage. Then came an entirely new headache: she refused to eat anything wed prepared. And Id made a real effort too! Apparently, there was gluten, too much fat, and who knows what else. In the end, she nibbled on some vegetables, eyeing even those like they were highly suspicious.
She wouldnt sleep in the room wed set up for them, sosurprise, surprisewe all trekked back to our flat in the city. The next day, when we went for a walk together, she was fussier than my three-year-old son. She was either too hot, her feet hurt, or she was simply bored. It was an enormous relief to say goodbye.
Since then, Ive really wonderedhow has William managed all these years? Somehow, in just two days, she completely wore us all out.
