My brother had been married for five years, yet none of us had ever met his wife. Then he told me they would be staying with me for two days. They arrived, and I simply couldn’t stand that woman.

So, my brother, David, after he finished university, moved to another city for workquite far, actually. His plan was only to stay there for a year, save up some money, and then come back to our hometown to buy a flat. But, as fate would have it, things didnt work out quite as he expected. He ended up meeting a girl there, they fell in love, and decided to get married. So, David ended up putting down roots in this new place. Wed never met his wife before.
It all happened at a bit of a funny time, really. Their wedding was arranged just as I was about to give birthI was nine months pregnant, literally could pop any day. So, of course, we decided I wouldnt be travelling anywhere. My dad couldnt get any time off work either, so in the end, only our mum made it to the wedding. She met Davids wife, but they didnt really bond or spend a lot of time together. After the ceremony, they went off on their honeymoon, and our mum came home a few days later. Mum said she seemed nicepretty, cheerful, seemed friendly enough. But the years went by and, strange as it sounds, none of us ever really got to know my brothers wife.
Anyway, this year David rang and had some really lovely newshed organised a proper tour around the country with his wife. Their first stop was going to be our place. Then they were heading off to one of Davids mates weddings, popping in at his school reunion, meeting up with their parents at the seaside, and finally heading home. They were going to stay with us for two nights. It sounded all straightforward enough. Now, we do have a rather cosy flat but, luckily, my in-laws have a summer cottage just outside town, and my mother-in-law said we could use it for the visit. Its a bit old-fashioned, hasnt had a refurb in ages, but honestly, its perfectly liveable.
Anyway, the day arrives and Im all in a good mood, waiting for them. When they turn up, thats when the trouble starts. David does the introductions and, honestly, from the very first moments, his wife, Alice, just kept complaining about pretty much everythingthe journey was too hot, too noisy, completely uncomfortable and on and on.
Then we got to the summer cottage and I thought Id show them around. As I was giving her the tour, Alice looked at the shower and loo like shed just been forced to shake hands with a stranger in the streether face was priceless. She dragged David aside, and after what looked like a rather intense chat, he came over and quietly asked my husband if he could just drive them back into town. Alice quite flatly said she wasnt going to use that shower. So, back they went to ours, she had a proper wash, sorted her hair and makeup, and only then did she come back to the cottage.
Thats when we realised she wouldnt eat anything wed prepared. And honestly, we put a lot of effort in. Turns out there was gluten, too much fat, I cant even remember what else she pointed out. She ended up nibbling only a few vegetables, and even those she eyed very suspiciously. Then the room wed sorted out for her and Davidshe wouldnt sleep there either. So, back to our place again.
Next day, we all went for a wander around the city, and honestly, Alice was fussier than my three-year-old! Either she was too hot, or her foot hurt, or she was bored and wanted to leave. I have never been so relieved to wave someone off in my life. I honestly cant wrap my head around how David has managed to live with her all these yearsshe managed to turn our whole world upside down in just two days.
