When My Daughter Gave Birth to Her Seventh Child, I Realised My Patience Had Finally Run Out!

For the past twenty years, I have lived with my daughter and her husband, but I simply dont have the strength to endure it any longer.
Im 65 years old and the grandmother of seven lively grandchildren. Many people might envy me, and I suppose in some ways I am lucky, but its hard to feel that way when Im constantly looking after the children and listening to their endless noise. My daughter seems oblivious to just how many children she has taken on.
When my sixth granddaughter was born, I sat down with Hannah for a serious chat. Never did I think Id need to discuss contraception with my 35-year-old daughter. But when she and her husband decided to have a seventh, I literally felt dizzy at the thought. There are only five bedrooms in our house, yet now there are nine of us living under one roof.
My daughter is fortunate that my late husband and I worked our entire lives to build a larger home and buy some land. Now, my son-in-law works this land and calls himself a farmer. Hannah supports him with everything, meanwhile I spend every waking hour in the kitchen, feeding what feels like an entire school class. As the children grow, their needs grow toonobody wants yesterdays dinner, only something freshly prepared.
After my sixth granddaughter arrived, I hoped Hannah might understand methat I could at least find a little time to rest from crying babies and nappy changes. Instead, things only became more overwhelming.
Throughout it all, Ive kept in touch with my brother Peter, who has lived alone ever since his daughter moved abroad.
One evening, Peter called and asked if I could come and stay with him because hed not been well. Of course, I worried about him, but inwardly, I was relieved to have an escape from the endless drudgery at home. Now that hes recovering, I honestly dont know if I could return to my old life, filled with the noise and chaos of children. Spending time with my brother, I remembered how much I love to read, listen to music, and watch old filmsthings Id forgotten about in the whirlwind of daily chores. At last, I can enjoy my retirement, rather than just waiting for my grandchildren to grow up. Yet, I havent the faintest idea how to tell my family this.
Now, my daughter rings me constantly, urging me home because she cant cope on her own. Im left tornwhat am I supposed to do?
In the midst of this, Ive learnt something vital: if you dont carve out time for your own happiness and well-being, no one else will do it for you. Its important to remember that loving your family doesnt mean neglecting yourself. Sometimes, choosing your own peace is the most loving thing you can do.
