Our daughter recently got married to a young man who, while not from a wealthy background, is level-headed and hardworking. Naturally, my husband and I werent overly thrilled at first, but we respected that it was her choice.
To celebrate the occasion, my husband gave our daughter a lovely flat, so that she and her new husband wouldnt have to worry about renting. Both of them were delighted with the gift, especially our son-in-laws parents.
They made sure to compliment the flat every time they visited, which started to happen rather often. My daughter even confided in me that her mother-in-law was always around, making it difficult for her to even call her friends in peace. Just recently, her mother-in-law suggested rather boldly that she, along with the rest of her family, should be registered as living in the flat too. She thought she could then sell her own place and use the proceeds to buy a bigger flat for everyone. In her view, the new place shouldn’t just belong to my daughter everything, according to her, ought to be shared in the family.
My daughter politely declined, as she found the request quite odd. However, her mother-in-law didnt take no for an answer. At first, she phoned every day under the guise of concern, but soon her persistence turned to emotional blackmail and arguments. She accused my daughter of not loving her son and even threatened that a divorce would mean losing the flat. Her own son tried to calm her down, but she refused to listen.
We decided not to intervene at first, thinking it best for the young couple to handle their own issues. But when our daughter began ringing us in tears, we could not bear it any longer and decided to step in.
My husband, a man of few words but great resolve, paid her mother-in-law a visit. He plainly told her to stop harassing our daughter, warning her that wed have to get the authorities involved if it continued. Suddenly, the mother-in-law changed her tune, insisting wed misunderstood her and she only wanted the best for everyone.
Thankfully, the trouble ceased after that. Our daughter stopped suffering and is now content again.
In the end, we all learned that when it comes to boundaries, standing up for what is fair and right is worth far more than keeping the peace. Sometimes, the greatest act of love is simply knowing when and how to say no.
