The elderly woman turned to Robert and spoke words that sent a cold shiver down his spine: Today will be a splendid, sunny day. Well have plenty of time to accomplish something.
It was a peaceful Wednesday as Robert travelled by train, the carriage sparsely populated. An elderly woman entered and took the seat beside him, clearly on her way to tend her village allotmentjust as Robert was, along with several others in the carriage. Memories of his late wife flooded his thoughts. They used to visit their little garden together, but after her illness, he had avoided going, haunted by an aching loneliness and wistful longing.
When the train halted at the station, the old lady turned to Robert and uttered those chilling words: Today will be a splendid, sunny day. Well have plenty of time to accomplish something. They were the precise words his late wife had always said. Startled, Robert only managed a nod, and so began their conversation: lamenting the meagre harvest that year, reflecting on the harsh winter, and sharing quiet hopes for the year ahead.
When they reached the bus stop, Robert was surprised that hed never bumped into this woman before. They walked together for a time, then parted ways. Arriving at his own allotment, Robert found the place choked by overgrown weeds after his prolonged absence. Yet the brief exchange on the train had buoyed his spirits, and he felt a quiet urge to look around the plot once more.
With his energy renewed, Robert set about turning the soil and pulling up stubborn weeds. Watching the dark earth emerge gave him such a sense of fulfilment, he decided, for now, not to put the plot up for sale. He took a break on the old bench, enjoying ham sandwiches and a thermos of tea. The sight of his favourite foxgloves swaying nearby, and the sweet scent of apples ripening under a new tree, filled him with gentle nostalgia.
Roberts mood lightened considerably, and he resolved to visit more often. Gathering mushrooms in the wood, he felt as though a weight had lifted from his soul. He knew he would keep at his work, for the pure joy and meaning it brought.
On the journey home, fate reunited him with the same elder woman from earlier. They shared apples and laughter, swapping tales about their gardens. She reassured him, with a warm smile, that he still had many years ahead, encouraging him to see joy and purpose in his work. When she alighted at her stop, Robert gazed at the gold-tipped sky, feeling a quiet contentment. The sadness that had once shadowed his days no longer weighed on his heart.
