The Whole Family Gathered Together to Bake Grandma’s Special Cake

We all helped Gran pack her things.
Honestly, we told her straight up that we were tired of her. Finally, spring had arrived, and she was heading off to the countryside until late autumn. The grandkids were indifferent, the daughter-in-law never liked her, and her son was always away with work. And even when he did come home, he treated her no better than the rest of us.
She was a burden to the family. She realised it herself, but she endured everything with quiet resilience, waiting for spring every year as if it were something precious, trustworthy, and genuine.
Spring came early this year. Gran spent a lot of time sitting in front of the flats, admiring the mild spring sky and basking in the sunshine. She looked so frail, in faded old clothes, worn out slippers with rubber overshoes stretched over them.
Even though her own family had little time for her, the neighbours were kind. Theyd always greet her, ask how she was, sometimes help her upstairs to her fifth-floor flat. The local lads would carry her shopping bag if they ran into her coming back from the supermarket on their way home from school.
Despite her age, Gran never shied away from housework. She cooked, did the laundry, cleaned. It was her routine. The daughter-in-law rarely bothered with much of it.
You sit at home all day, so just get on with it, shed say brazenly when she came home from work, kicking her shoes off in the hallway.
The grandkids barely spoke to Gran. When their friends came over, she stayed in her room, ever since one of them said she embarrassed them with how she looked.
Gran never argued or spoke up. She mostly stayed quiet. At night, when the house was silent, shed shed a few tears in her little room, mourning the hand life had dealt her.
She was sent to the train station by taxi, so no one had to take buses with her. She didnt have much luggagean old bag and a small bundle of bits and bobs.
Leaning on her stick, she shuffled quietly along the platform. She sat on a bench, waiting. When the train arrived, she climbed aboard, gazing out the window with warmth and hope. When the train began to move, she pulled out a crumpled photograph from her bagher son, grandkids, and daughter-in-law smiling at her. Lately, shed only seen those smiles in this photo. Gran kissed it gently and tucked it away.
At her stop, she wandered towards the village. Someone gave her a lift almost all the way home. She opened the garden gate and walked along the muddy path to her cottage. Everything here felt familiar and welcoming. She was neededeven if only by rickety walls, a crooked fence, and a sagging porch. Here, she belonged.
The village meant everything to Gran. She was born here; her children grew up here; her husband had died here. Shed spent nearly half her life in those walls, and had mourned her eldest sonwho, fatefully, didnt make it as far as she had.
Gran opened the shutters, got the old stove going, and settled down on the bench by the window. She remembered when her children used to sit here, eat at this table, sleep in those beds. Theyd run across these floors and gaze out those very windows. She could almost hear their childhood voices echoing. Back then, she was their mumthe most important person in their lives.
The sun shone into the window just as it did back then, and there were countless springs, both happy and complicated, lived within these walls. Gran smiled at the gentle country spring.

In the morning, she didnt wake up. She stayed in her cottage forever, on her own patch of earth. On the table lay stacks of old photos, and one new but crumpled picturethe same one from yesterday, with the smiling faces of her family.
While were alive, theres so much we can do.
We can apologise, say thank you, open up about how we feel. While were alive, we shouldnt put these things off. Because once someones gone, theyre not coming back, and were left carrying stones in our hearts that are hard to bear.
Its important to live with faith and honesty, and act kindly from the heart. Love and wait, cherish the feelings of others, and never forget those who gave us life and helped us stand tall.
