Mate, you wont believe this story its like something straight out of a soap opera. So, Sarahs parents gave us this absolutely massive wedding gift a flat! They handed us the keys and said it was ours, officially. Thing is, as it was a new build, theyd bought it straight from the developer, so it was just a shell really. My mother-in-law said that since they had sorted the flat, my own parents should help out with the renovations. Thankfully, my parents had already given us quite a nice sum of money before, but they also agreed to pitch in with the flat as well.
Right after the wedding, we decided to get cracking with the renovations. My dads a builder, too, so he sorted all the materials and supplies, and I was his extra pair of hands. Sometimes even Sarah would come along to help out as well.
Occasionally, my father-in-law would lend a hand. Wed decided against renting anywhere else during all this, just to save a bit of cash, so we moved in with Sarahs parents while we got the flat ready.
One day, I was rummaging about for some paperwork, and I happened to come across the documents for our flat. And mate, I was absolutely floored they werent in either of our names. Sarahs mum was down as the owner!
That evening, my dad and I were meant to pick out some bathroom bits, but I told him to leave it till the next day. I explained what Id found, and said we needed to have a chat and figure out what it meant.
As soon as everyone was in, I just came out and asked, Why is your mum the owner of our flat? Why not Sarah?
Sarahs mum just rolled her eyes and said, Honestly, you sound like such a child! Of course its under my name its just so Sarah doesnt get upset.
So what does that mean? I pressed.
She just shot back, Well, you could divorce her and then try to walk away with half of the place!
Our place? Is it really alright for me and my dad to be spending all this money and time doing up a flat that isnt even ours? And do you really think were going to split up already? We only just got married!
Sarah looked at her mum and said, quietly, Mum, I asked you to put it under my name…
So you knew about it all along? I asked her, feeling a bit betrayed.
Its not like that she answered, Yes, I knew, but I told my mum she had to put it in my name!
Oh, Sarah, what a cracking start to married life starting off with a lie!
Anyway, its been a few days since I moved back in with my parents, and honestly, I havent a clue what to do next. Sarah keeps trying to talk but I just need some space to figure things out. I would never have expected this kind of sneakiness from her family then again, maybe loads of parents are like that
What would you do if you were in my shoes?
