So, Emmas parents gave us a seriously generous wedding present an actual flat! They handed us the keys and told us it was ours, but since the building was brand new, theyd bought it as a shell, straight from the developers. My mother-in-law mentioned that since theyd sorted out the flat, my parents ought to help out with the renovations. My parents had already given us a decent lump sum before, but they agreed to pitch in with the renovation as well.
Right after the wedding, we decided to get cracking on fixing the place up. Dads a builder, so he took care of buying all the materials and I was the extra pair of hands, sometimes Emma would come and help as well.
Emmas dad pitched in every so often too. We decided not to rent anywhere until the work was done, to save a bit of cash, so we moved in with Emmas parents for the time being.
One day I was looking for some paperwork when I stumbled across the documents for our flat. Something about them caught my eye and it really wound me up Emmas mum was listed as the owner!
That night, Dad and I were supposed to go buy some tiles and bits for the bathroom, but I asked if we could do it the next day instead. I told him what Id found and said I needed to get my head around what it all meant.
Later, when everyone was home, I just came out with it: Why is the flat in your name, Mum, and not Emmas? I asked.
Her mum just said, Oh, youre being naïve! Obviously, its to protect Emma.
I asked her, Protect her from what?
She replied, Well, what if you two get divorced and you try to take half of our flat?
Our flat? Is it really fair that Dad and I are putting all this money and hard work into the renovations when it seems only half ours anyway? And why are you assuming were going to split up? Weve only just got married!
Emma muttered, a bit embarrassed, Mum, I told you to sign it over to me.
I looked at her, So you knew about all of this?
She stammered, Not properly. I did know, but I told Mum to put it in my name!
Honestly, I just felt completely betrayed. What a wonderful start to married life, eh, Emma? Kicking off with a lie.
Its been a few days now since I went back to my mum and dads. Ive got no idea what to do. Emma keeps trying to talk to me, but I just need time to think. I never expected this kind of sneaky behaviour from her family, but maybe all parents are a bit like this at the end of the day
I just dont know what my next move should be. What would you do in my shoes?
