My husband left me for my sister. He actually moved in with her. And then, three years later, he dumped her, toothis time for her best friend.
Wed been married for seven years. It wasnt some fairytale romance, but it wasnt awful either. You know the sort of thing: work, a little house, Sunday roasts, family get-togethers. My sister used to pop round all the time. She was always nearby, always involved. Honestly, looking back, there werent any warning signs. If anything, it just seemed natural that they got on well. Sometimes shed stay for lunch, other times Id call her over to help out with bits and bobs, since I worked all day. Truly, nothing ever crossed my mind.
Then, on what felt like a totally normal Thursday, he left early, said he was heading to work. Didnt come home for lunch, wasnt back for dinner. No word the next day either. By the third day, when he finally answered his phone, he didnt apologise, didnt bother explaining. All he said was, Im not coming back. I just need space. Honestly, I thought he was having a midlife wobble, maybe just staying at a mates. But that very week, someone in the family finally told me what no one else would sayhed moved in with my sister.
What started as a rumour became hard fact almost instantly. My parents found out, then the uncles, then the neighbours. My sister stopped picking up my calls, and he didnt show his face near the house. A few days later, she came for her things while I was out. No one offered any explanations. People just sort of accepted it, like there was nothing left to say.
They set up home together in a different part of town. Then, before Id blinked, they started showing up at family gatherings I didnt feel able to attend anymore. My sister would tell anyone who asked, You cant help who you fall in love with, and he acted like hed just been miserable with me all along. I was left aloneembarrassed and hurting. Thankfully, we didnt have children; that would have made it all so much worse.
Three years drifted by. I carried on as best I could. As far as I knew, they were still togetherat least, thats what everyone said. Then, one day, I heard through the grapevine they werent living together anymore. Hed walked out on her, too. Of course, he wasnt on his own: now he was seeing my sisters closest friendthe very woman whod been around from the beginning, who knew everything, saw everything, even offered advice and support when it turned ugly.
My sister was devastated. Hed just changed the script once again, blaming her for being confused, insisting hed been unhappy with her too. But honestly, by then, no one was taking him seriously.
Our family is still in bits. I dont speak to my sister. Shes cut off from her ex-best friend. And as for himhes never said sorry. Never owned up to anything.
Sometimes I wonder, is this what karma really looks like?
