My relationship with my ex ended in a courtroom. I wont assign blamethere are always two people responsible when it comes to a relationship falling apart.
The truth is, my second wife found herself a lover. Hes a well-off businessman who moved to our town years ago and ended up opening a little café on the High Street. At first, she tried to be secretive about their affair, but eventually they stopped hiding altogether.
Then she came to me and bluntly announced she was filing for divorce and planning on taking me to court for half of our house. She expected me to be anxious and flustered, but the house was bought solely with my own hard-earned pounds. My ex-wife had nothing to do with that house except living there with me for two years. Now, somehow, she had the nerve to lay claim to it.
I took the news calmly. I didnt try to talk her out of taking me to court. I simply waited for her to lose the case and have to pay the legal fees. Id already been through something similar with my first wife. That court battle dragged on for more than three yearsall because we couldnt come to any agreement. Every time we set foot in court, it ended in a blazing row.
My first wife did manage to get her way in the endshe sued me for half of my assets. Shed found an excellent solicitor and, as a result, I lost the house that had been left to me by my father.
But with my second wife, I handled things far more wisely. Before we were married, I already owned a flat, one Id renovated with my own hands. However, it was registered in my brothers name. Hes the one person I trust implicitly. So, when it came time for this divorce, it turned out, legally, I didnt own anything. After the mess of my first marriage, I promised myself that no woman would ever take me for a fool again.
