One day I was searching for some documents, and when I finally found them, my eyes happened to fall on the paperwork for our flat. Something in those papers caught me by surprise and left me quite upset, because

My wife Emilys parents gave us an astonishingly expensive wedding gifta flat! They presented us with the keys and declared we were the owners, but the place was brand-new, purchased as a shell. My mother-in-law remarked that since they had bought us a flat, it was only proper that my parents chip in with the renovation. My parents had already given us a generous sum beforehand, but they agreed to also help with the upkeep.
We decided to dive straight into the renovations after the wedding. My dad, being a seasoned builder, sourced all the materials, and I became his makeshift helper; sometimes Emily popped by to lend a hand as well.
Now and then, my father-in-law would assist, too. We made a pact not to rent the flat before finishing the refurbishments, hoping to save up and stay with Emily’s folks in the meantime.
One foggy afternoon, as I was rummaging for a typed letter and some council paper, my gaze drifted over to the stack relating to our flat. Something in the deeds jarred meit turned out my mother-in-law was the official owner!
That night, Dad and I were meant to pick up tiles and fixtures, but I asked him if we could shift it and told him what Id stumbled on. I wanted to talk everything through and make sense of it.
Why is Mum the owner of the flat? Why not Emily? I asked, as straightforward as you like once everyone was home.
Oh, don’t be daft! Its just so our Emily doesnt get upset, my mother-in-law replied breezily.
What do you mean?
Well, you’d run off with half the flat if you got divorced!
Your flat? You think its fair that Dad and I are pouring time and money inalmost equal to half the flats worth? And why assume well split up? Weve barely started!
Mum, I asked you to put the flat in my name, Emily muttered.
So you knew about this little trickery?
No, you dont see I did know, but I told Mum she really should put it in my name!
Oh Emily, what a brilliant way to start our marriage! With secrets!
Since that bizarre evening, Ive moved back to my parents house. I still dont know what to do next. Emily keeps reaching out, but I need time to think. I never expected such cunning from her family. Though, maybe all parents do something like this…
How on earth do I handle this?
