Emily is still young, shell have more children! she declared. In the end, nobody wanted the child.
Emily and James grew up together in the quiet market town of Marlow, attending the same class at school. When they finished their A-levels, both went off to university, and afterward moved to London in search of work. They shared a modest flat, landed jobs, and lived together unmarried. But when Emily found herself pregnant, James walked out. He hadnt planned on becoming a father.
Shaken, Emily decided to move back home to raise her child. Jamess mother, who held a respected position in Marlow, loudly proclaimed to everyone that Emily was having someone else’s child; this baby had nothing to do with their family. The tension only grew, since both families lived near one another.
Many friends knew about the situation. Emily gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. She had no complaints about Jamess family, hoping only to raise her daughter peacefully. Yet Jamess mother persisted in telling everyone the child wasn’t her granddaughter.
Just look at her! she would say. That childs hair is as fair as can be, but were all dark-haired. And the nose! Its certainly not ours. Were all quite attractive, but shes plain, trying to worm her way into our family. Dreadful people!
Fed up with this drama, Emily suggested a paternity test to finally put Jamess mothers mind at rest. Why did she bother? As soon as the result came back, Jamess mother immediately invited Emily round to meet her granddaughter. Emily received countless lovely presents for her daughter. Since she survived on her mothers state pension, this kindness meant a great deal.
After a time, the grandmother asked to look after her granddaughter for a spell. Emily protested, saying the little one was only a year old, far too young to be away from her mother for days at a time. The grandmother became cross.
She warned Emily that shed go to court for visitation rights. Whats more, she argued, the girl would be much better off in her large house, with all the advantages for a child to flourish. The courts, she claimed, would surely note James had a flat, provided for his daughter (with payslips to prove it), while Emily was unemployed and raising the girl alone. In her view, Emily was still young enough to have another child. She advised Emily to surrender her daughter willingly; after all, Marlow’s judges all knew her. Emily, however, chose to stand her ground and keep her daughter. So began a legal battle that dragged on for years.
The child, once shunned by the powerful family, became the one they most treasured. Witnesses were called, photos were taken, complaints and accusations flew. Emily had to move and hide more than once. So much happened. But at last, things quieted down. James remarried and had a son. His mother shifted her attention to the new baby. By then, Emilys daughter had started primary school. Emily moved back to London but still visited her mother and daughter often. Eventually, she met someone new. Her mother encouraged her to rebuild her life, promising to mind the granddaughter for now. Emily would fetch her child home once she had settled.
Emily remarried. She and her husband rented a flat and awaited the arrival of a baby. All was well. Still, Emily hesitated to bring her daughter to London; they had nowhere suitable for her. Her husband wasnt particularly interested in raising someone elses child. Emily felt her daughter was better off with her grandmother, among friends, attending the same school. With a new baby on the way and no one else to care for her daughter, she made peace with the arrangement. At least her mother had company, and the girl was well looked after.
But the grandmothers health began to fail. Ambulances visited more than once, and she spent time in hospital. Then, neighboursretired coupleslooked after the girl. Jamess mother, who once fought so hard, no longer seemed to care. When she passed Emilys mother on the street, she smiled thinly: You should have listened! If youd left her with me, shed be reading French by now, playing the piano, attending the very best schools. Now, her mothers abandoned her. Wholl she become when she grows up? James, the biological father, never took an interest in his daughter. So, despite all the wrangling, the girl nobody truly fought for ended up with no one willing to claim her. Her future remained uncertaina reminder that true love and care come not from winning the fight for a child, but dedicating yourself to raising and nurturing them, come what may.
