I only knew my parents from the photos tucked away in an old family album. My mother passed away when she gave birth to me, and my father, devastated by the loss of his beloved, couldnt bring himself to look at me at all. He renounced all responsibility for me. It was my grandfather who came to the hospital and took me home, becoming my sole guardian.
Granddad couldnt afford to give up work, so he hired a nanny to look after me until he came home each day. Later, things got easier when I started going to nursery school. The years flew by, and Granddad and I always had a wonderful understanding between us, never any rows, always searching for middle groundeven when I went through my wild teenage phase. Ive always felt so grateful to have him by my side. I hardly dare to imagine what might have happened to me if it hadnt been for him.
Of course, the best way I knew to show my gratitude was to help around the house and do my best at school. He was proud of me for making it to every academic and sports competition available.
He was also the one who helped me choose my career. Id always had a keen interest in biology but was unsure about my direction, so Granddad introduced me to a family friendan accomplished doctor. We talked, and I realised this was exactly what my heart wanted.
I spent all my years at university completely immersed in my studies. My internship was at one of the top hospitals in London. At times, the journey felt impossibly hard, but I persevered and managed to specialise in neurosurgery!
Just after I finished my studies, the director of a respected private hospital reached out to offer me a job. Turning it down would have been utter madness. Thats when the heavy work beganendless shifts and a stream of operations, and Im proud to say not a single unsuccessful case among them. After a year, Id given several lectures, as even the senior doctors were keen to hear me speak. After another three years, my name was well-known in international circles. So, when I was offered a position at one of the best hospitals in the United States, neither Granddad nor I were surprised. We weighed it all up and decided we had to give it a go.
So, we packed our bags and moved abroad. Granddad didnt last long, though; he missed England dearly and soon returned. I would have gone back with him if I hadnt met the love of my life here. I met Theo during one of my lectures; hes a surgeon from another hospital. We started as friends, then dated, and eventually moved in together. We decided to marry in England, as I dreamed of Granddad walking me down the aisle. I tried desperately to persuade him to return, but he refused, saying his days were numbered and he wanted to be buried at home.
One afternoon, when Theo and I were at Granddads, playing board games and soaking up our time together, I received a phone call from my father He began by congratulating me on my upcoming wedding, but I had no interest in listening to his feigned sincerity and asked outright what he wanted. His reply?
What I want is your money, darling! Youre living like royalty now. Youve nabbed yourself a rich man somewhere overseas and youre rolling in it! Surely it wouldnt hurt to spare a little for your old dad, would it?
I couldnt bear to hear another word, so I hung up and blocked his number.
I truly cant fathom where he found the nerve to ring and claim he was family after casting me aside.
For me, I have two true family membersand Id do anything for thembut my father means nothing to me.
