My Ex-Boyfriend Hid Me from His Friends Because He Said I Was “Not on His Level”

My ex-boyfriend kept me hidden from his friends because, according to him, I wasnt on his level. I knew this even from the beginning, but silly me, I stayed. He grew up in a wealthy family in a small English townhis father owned several businesses, his mother didnt work, they lived in a large house and drove a new Mercedes. Meanwhile, I was in an ordinary neighbourhood, working as a cashier in Tesco, helping my mum with bills at home.
We first met at a café where Id grab a coffee before my shift. He quickly started calling, texting, inviting me on dates. At first, everything felt lovely but oddly tense. He never took me to places where he met his own mates; always chose quiet, tucked-away spots where no one knew us. If we wandered through the city centre and I bumped into someone I knew, hed let go of my hand straight away and say, Lets walk this way. When I asked why, he said, My friends are terribly judgemental, I dont want gossip. I swallowed the excuse.
The moment I truly saw it was at a party he invited me to. I dressed nicely, bought myself a simple but charming dress. As we walked in, he whispered, Stay by the bar, Ill greet a few friends. Twenty minutes ticked by. Then forty. I watched him laugh, take photos, hug people. He never introduced me to anyone. When I approached, he blocked me gently and said, Wait outside for a bit. Outdoors, he explained, Very important people here, I dont want any awkwardness.
Over time, his comments became more cutting. He said I spoke a bit too common, I ought to dress differently, that he wouldnt post photos with me online because his family were private. He never brought me to his house. I never met his parents. Whenever I invited him to my mums birthday, hed come up with excuseswork, the car, exhaustion. But when there was something happening in his social circle, hed disappear for the whole weekend.
One day, I asked him outright, Are you embarrassed to be with me? He paused for several seconds and replied, Its not embarrassment we just come from different worlds. Youre a lovely person, but my friends live on another level. I dont want to be judged. That sentence broke something inside me. I asked, Can you judge me then? He just shrugged.
The worst was when I saw photos on his page with a colleaguedaughter of a well-known solicitor in town. Fancy restaurants, expensive events, his beaming smile, tagged locations. With her, he posed proudly. With me, not a single mention. When I confronted him, he said she was just a friend. We argued badly. I told him I wouldnt be a secret anymore. He replied, If you dont like how things are, thats the end.
And thats how it ended. We broke up right there. I walked alone for several blocks, crying. A week later, he was officially with the other woman. I kept working at Tesco, still seeing his photos in designer clothes, on trips and at dinners. He never apologised. He never admitted he hurt me.
Now I realise, for a year, I was the girl no one was meant to seethe one who only existed behind closed doors. The one never quite enough for the group photo. It’s not something you can erase easily.
