I Paid for My Stepdaughter’s Fifteenth Birthday Party—Then Her Father Went Back to His Ex-Wife Ten …

I paid for the party for my stepdaughters fifteenth birthday, and her father went back to her mother.

Ten years.
Ten years I raised that child as if she were my own.

I changed her nappies when she was tiny. Drove her to ballet each week. Helped her with her homework, taught her to tie her shoelaces, hugged her while she sobbed after her first heartbreak.
She called me Mum.
Not Dads wife.
Not stepmum.
Mum.

For her fifteenth birthday, Id been planning for months. I hired a lovely hall in Oxford, ordered her a dress, arranged a DJ and nibbles for a whole crowd of guests. I emptied my savings, but I believed it was worth every penny.
She was my child.

Or so I thought.

Three weeks before the party, her biological mother reappeared. The woman whod been gone for years no support, no calls, not a single birthday card.
All of a sudden, she was in my house, teary-eyed, insisting she wanted to make amends and start again.

I should have sensed something was wrong.
But I wanted to believe her.

On the day of the party, I arrived early to check the last details. The hall glittered decorated just right, the tables set, everything in its place. While I fussed over the finishing touches, someone tapped my shoulder.

They told me it would be best if I left.
That it was a family moment.
That I didnt belong there.

I tried to explain that I was the one whod raised this girl.
That Id paid for everything, every bit of it.
But it meant nothing.

The man Id spent years building a life with just said it was for the best for the girl.

I didnt cry. I didnt shout. I simply walked out.

That night, as I packed my things into boxes, the doorbell rang. It was late.

I opened the door.

There she was in her birthday dress, face streaked with tears, shoulders slumped.

I left, she said. I couldnt stay there without you.

I tried to tell her she ought to be with her parents, but she clung to me and whispered,

Youre my mum. You know all my favourite things. Youve always been here for me.

I held her tight.

She told me when they gave thanks to their family at the party, shed asked where I was. They said Id chosen not to come.
So she told everyone the truth.
And then she walked out.

She stayed with me.

We watched films until midnight, ate takeaway pizza, just talked. For the first time in days, I felt some peace.

The next day, my phone wouldnt stop ringing. I didnt answer.

Months later, the paperwork was final. I started a new life.
She threw herself into her studies and chose to stay with me.

She still keeps that party dress in her wardrobe.

To remember the day I chose my real family, she says.

And sometimes I cant help but wonder:

Who truly left whom that day?
