I could never really get along with my mother-in-law, you know?
At first, we tried living under the same roof, but honestly, it lasted barely a month.
Things with my father-in-law actually werent bad at all; we hit it off and could have a good natter. But with his wife, things were just messy from the get-go. She took one look at me and made her mind up.
Youve picked the wrong pan! shed shout at me, You dont even know how to boil potatoes properly
Stuff like that would fly at me all the time, day in and day out.
Eventually, my husband and I moved into a rented flat, and thats when I found out I was pregnant. My father-in-law pulled my mother-in-law aside and told her firmly not to wind me up, for the sake of her soon-to-be granddaughter.
Shes a right difficult woman, hed mutter, Even when we were young, she was a handful, but shes totally off her rocker now. Only married her because she waited while I was off doing National Service, and then I just got used to her.
And you know, during my pregnancy, his wife went completely quiet. But literally the moment our daughter was bornfive weeks early, but perfectly healthytrouble started all over again.
Thats not your child, my mother-in-law snapped at my husband.
Are you dense? Cant you see why she was early? Not your baby, mate.
Thank goodness my husband stuck up for me and shut that nonsense down. The last time she started in on me, he actually threw her out and said not to come back. So, my mother-in-law refused to meet her granddaughter and wouldnt even consider making amends. But my father-in-law visited us often, always bringing little gifts for the baby, even though hed get an earful at home for it.
Now heres the wild bit: No clue what sort of telly hed been watching, but when our little one turned three, my father-in-law took her out for a walkand without telling us, went and got a DNA test done. Just trying to prove a point to his wife, I suppose.
He turned up at our door all flustered one afternoonIs my son about? Actually, best hes not. Ive just picked up the DNA results. Turns out my wife was right all along. Who have you had this baby with? Shes not one of us!
I was gobsmackedI had no idea thered been a test, and I was certain my daughter was my husbands.
Then my husband and I got our own tests straightaway, and of course, he was the father. Turns out, my father-in-law wasnt even my daughters biological grandad.
Oh, so this is what waiting for me to come back from National Service means! he ranted.
They ended up getting divorced in their old age, even though she begged and pleaded for forgiveness for ages.
Honestly, before you start pointing fingers, maybe have a look at your own life first, eh?
What do you reckon about all that?
