My Parents Forced Me to Have an Abortion to Avoid Shame—They Didn’t Care That Doctors Later Told Me I Was Infertile, But Fate Eventually Dealt My Father a Harsh Punishment as Well

I was just a young man when I first met that scoundrel. She treated me like I was the only person in the world, showering me with praise and playing the perfect partner. But as soon as she got what she wanted, she vanished without a trace. Our separation left me utterly shattered, though at the time, I had no idea what consequences would come of our brief relationship. I was completely taken aback when I learnt that shed left me with a permanent reminder of her: I was about to become a father.

At first, I told no one. But it soon became clear that I couldnt keep this secret, especially since by the time Id wrapped my head around it, she was already four months along. I gathered every shred of courage I had and broke the news to my mother. Of course, she wasted no time in telling my father, who only hurled accusations and harsh words my way.

Running scared of public disgrace, my parents pressured me to convince her to end the pregnancy, even though it posed a genuine health risk. Reluctantly, I agreedbut in the days that followed, I wept bitterly, overwhelmed by the sense that Id betrayed not just my own flesh and blood, but myself as well. Ive sought forgiveness from God ever since, unable to forgive myself for what happened. My life came to a standstill, and at that point, I wished it would simply end. My parents didnt appear to care; their main concern remained the familys good name.

I made the choice to leave their house, and within two years, I managed it. I finished my university degree and built a solid career for myself.

Eventually, I accomplished everything Id ever dreamed of. But there was one thing that escaped me, despite all the money Id earned: a family of my own. Thats been the one thing I could never buy. I lost the chance to be a father ages ago. I dated women, even received marriage proposals, but the moment they learned about my infertility, they would quietly disappear from my life. My parents are to blamefor everything. They robbed me of the joy of fatherhood. I havent wanted to see them or even speak to them for years. When my father suffered a heart attack and my mother begged me to look after him, I refused. They betrayed me. To ease my conscience, I send them some pounds on the first of every month. I firmly believe parents should stand by their children, not turn their backs when things get hard. Mine never realised how much pain they caused. If theres anything Ive learnt, its that wounds from those closest to you take the longest to healand sometimes, forgiveness is a journey you must make alone.
