He often travels for work, and Ive grown accustomed to it over the years. He replies to my messages late, comes home exhausted, and says theyve had long meetings. I never felt the need to check his phone or ask too many questions. I trusted him.
One afternoon, Im folding laundry in the bedroom when he sits on the edge of the bed, not even bothering to take off his shoes, and says,
I need you to listen to me without interrupting.
In that moment, I know something isnt right. He tells me hes seeing another woman.
I ask who she is. He hesitates for a few seconds, then finally tells me her nameSophie. She works near his office, he says. Shes younger than him. I ask if hes in love. He tells me he doesnt know, but with her, he feels differentless tired. I ask him if hes thinking of leaving. He replies,
Yes. I cant keep pretending anymore.
That night, he sleeps on the sofa. He heads out early the next morning and doesnt come home for two days. When he returns, hes already spoken to a solicitor. He tells me he wants a divorce as soon as possible, no drama. Then he starts explaining what hell take and what he wont. I just sit and listen in silence. In less than a week, Im no longer living there.
The months that follow are tough. I have to handle everything on my ownall the paperwork, bills, and decision-making that we used to share. I start going out more, not out of desire, but because I cant bear to be at home. I accept almost every invitation, just to be around people. On one of these outings, I meet a man while waiting in the queue for coffee. We chat about everyday things: the weather, the crowds, how rubbish public transport is today.
We keep catching each others glance. One day, sitting at a small café table, he tells me his agehes fifteen years younger than me. Hes matter-of-fact about it, not making any odd comments or jokes. He asks how old I am, then carries on the conversation like its nothing. He asks me out again. I say yes.
With him, everything feels different. There are no grand promises or sugary declarations. He asks me if Im alright, listens to me, stays by my side even when I talk about my divorce, without changing the subject. Then, one day, he tells me straightforwardly that he likes me and he knows Im coming out of something complicated. I tell him I dont want to repeat old mistakes and I dont want to depend on anyone else again. He says hes not trying to control or rescue me.
My ex finds out through other people. After months of no contact, he rings me up. He asks if its true Im seeing a younger man. I say, Yes. He asks if Im not embarrassed. I tell him that real shame lies in his betrayal. He hangs up without saying goodbye.
My marriage ended because he left me for someone else. But now, without searching for it, Ive found myself standing beside someone who loves and values me.
Could this be life giving me a gift?
