Yesterday I Quit My Job to Try to Save My Marriage. Today, I’m Not Sure If I’ve Lost Both.

Yesterday I quit my job in hopes of saving my marriage. And now I dont even know if Ive lost them both.

Id worked for that company for nearly eight years. I started not long after tying the knot, and for a long time, the place was my symbol of securitysteady pay, predictable hours, plans for the future. Hannah always knew how much this job meant to me. Wed even talked about buying a house with what wed saved, partly thanks to my position there. I never imagined my greatest mistake would happen at work, the very place I thought was my anchor.

The woman I cheated with started about six months ago. At first, there was absolutely nothing unusual. She sat nearby, asked for advice, needed help settling in. Bit by bit, we started grabbing lunchat first with others, then just the two of us. Shed share stories about her rocky relationshipendless rows, uncertainty. I listened. More often than I cared to admit. I started deleting messages, just in case; silencing my phone when I got home, inventing meetings that ran over.

One evening, it happenedan affair that was neither planned nor romantic, just a conscious decision that I instantly regretted. I knew it was wrong. That same night I went home and kissed my wife goodnight, as if nothing had changed. Thats the part that haunts me most now.

A few weeks later, Hannah found out. We were in the bedroom and she picked up my phone to look up a number. She found messages that were anything but innocent. She asked me straight out. I couldnt answer. She was silent for minutes before telling me she wanted the whole story, right then and there. I told her everything. That night, we didnt sleep in the same bed.

After that, tension at home was thick enough to cut with a knife. She started asking detailed questionswhere, when, how often, whether we were still in touch. I answered everything, honestly. Then, one day she said something Ill never forget:
I dont know if Ill ever be able to forgive you, but I do know I cant live knowing you see her every day.

Thats when my job entered the equation.

The ultimatum was unmistakable. She said she wasnt forcing me, but to feel safe, she needed me to leave that office behind. She told me I could either resign or accept that she might go. There were no raised voices, no tears. It made it all feel even heavier.

I spent sleepless nights doing sumscalculating expenses, checking savings, eyeing up debts and the mortgage. I knew leaving meant no income, at least for now. But I also knew if I didnt, our marriage would likely end. Yesterday, I walked into my bosss office, handed in my resignation, and left with a strange mix of fear and relief.

When I got home, I told Hannah. Id hoped shed be reassured. She said she appreciated it, but that it didnt instantly fix anything. She told me she still didnt know if she could ever trust me again. She was honest that she needed time. She made no promises.

So today, Im out of work and my marriage is in limbo.
I dont know if Ive simply lost my job…
Or if Im about to lose my wife as well.

If theres any lesson here, its that trust takes years to build, but can be shattered in a momentand you might find yourself paying a price you never imagined.
