I Lost the Will to Help My Mother-in-Law When I Discovered What She’d Done—But I Can’t Bring Myself …

I’ve lost my desire to help my mother-in-law after discovering what she did. Yet, I simply cant abandon her.

I have two children, each by a different father. My first child is my daughter, Emily, who has just turned sixteen. Emilys father supports her financially and is always in touch. Although my first husband has remarried and now has two more children with his second wife, he never forgets about our daughter.

My son, however, hasn’t been nearly as fortunate. Two years ago, my second husband fell ill and, just three days later, passed away in hospital. Even now, it’s hard to comprehend that hes really gone. Sometimes I catch myself imagining the front door swinging open, expecting to see him step in with a warm smile, wishing me a good day. Those are the days I find myself in tears.

During these difficult times, I’ve tried to be there for my late husbands mother, Margaret. She suffered as much as I didthe loss of her only son left a huge emptiness. Weve supported each other ever since, helping one another through the toughest days. We phoned and visited each other often, constantly talking about my husband and keeping his memory alive.

At one point, we even considered moving in together, but Margaret changed her mind. Somehow, all these years just slipped by. Still, my relationship with my mother-in-law has always been wonderfulone could say we were more like close friends.

I still remember when I was pregnant, Margaret randomly brought up DNA tests. I never really understood why. I suppose shed watched some daytime TV show or another about a man who raised someone elses child, only to learn the truth years later. I told her outright that it was a ridiculous idea.

If a man doubts his own child, he will never truly care for himhell just be a Sunday dad!

Margaret insisted she firmly believed that I was expecting her sons baby. I was convinced shed ask for a test when I gave birth, but she never said another word on the matter.

This summer, Margarets health took a terrible turn for the worse. With her struggling, I decided it would be best for her to move closer to me. I found an estate agent and planned to help her buy a flat nearby.

Not long after, Margaret ended up in hospital. For the house conveyancing, I needed her late husbands death certificateshe was in no shape to go searching for paperwork, so I went over to her flat. While rummaging through her files, I came across something completely unexpected: a DNA test. It turned out that when my son was just two months old, Margaret had arranged for a paternity test, which had confirmed who his father was.

I was stunned. After all these years, I realised Margaret had never really trusted me! I confronted her without hesitation. Now, shes full of apologies and says shes truly sorry for her foolishness. But I cant shake this sense of betrayal, especially since she kept it from me all these years.

At this point, I find myself unwilling to help Margaret in the way I once would have. Yet, at the same time, I know she has nobody else to turn to.

I certainly dont want to deprive my son of his grandmother, so Ill continue to help my mother-in-law. Still, any warmth or trust that existed between us is well and truly gone.
