I Moved in with Him to Start Fresh, Only to End Up Sleeping on the Sofa in My So-Called ‘Own Home’

I moved in with him, thinking it was the perfect chance for a fresh start, only to find myself eventually sleeping on the sofa in what was meant to be my own home. When I agreed to live with William, it was with the hope that wed truly build something together. I left my familiar neighbourhood behind, gave up my usual routines and most of my belongings. I took only some clothes, a head full of dreams, and the belief that Id finally have a home as a couple. Williams flat was a tiny bedsit, but he assured me it would just be for a while before we found somewhere bigger together. I trusted his word.

The first few months were actually rather nice. We shared a bed, cooked meals together, and binge-watched shows most evenings. Yes, it was cramped, but it was our space, and that made it feel bigger than it was. Then, one day, William came home looking a bit grim and said that his mum was in some financial trouble and his younger sister had lost her flat. He told me it would only be for a few days, just until they sorted themselves out. I didnt want to seem selfish, so I agreed.

Thats where the trouble started. Those few days stretched on through several weeks. The only bedroom quickly became his mums and sisters domain because Mum needs a proper bed at her age. His sister took over the wardrobe and bathroom too, acting as if shed always lived there. Meanwhile, I was left to unfold the sofa in the living room every night. I tried to convince myself it was just temporary, that theyd soon get back on their feet. But no one even seemed to be making plans to leave. Each evening I arranged the sofa with blankets to get by, and in the mornings Id pack everything away so that the living room looked normal.

Then the inconveniences crept in. I had nowhere for my things, no corner to call my own, and finding any bit of privacy felt impossible. Id come home knackered from work and couldnt even rest properly. On top of that, his mum had something to say about everything the way I cooked, dressed, even what time I got home. His sister didnt have a job and only got up around noon, leaving dirty dishes everywhere without a care. I started to feel like an intruder in my own place.

The part that hurt me most, though, was Williams indifference. He never once said, My partner deserves her own space too. He didnt set a single boundary, just kept telling me to be patient, try to understand, and not to make a fuss. One evening, exhausted from yet another sleepless night, I told him we needed a solution I couldnt keep living as a guest, sleeping on the sofa. But all he replied was, This is my mum and my family. Thats when it hit me: I didnt seem to be included in that definition.

I spoke to my mum and moved back to the place where Id grown up. Occasionally, William calls me, insisting we can be together but only if we have our own separate homes. Honestly, Im left not knowing quite what to think.

Ive learnt that compromise is vital in any relationship but not at the expense of your own dignity and peace. If youre made to feel like an outsider in your own home, its not really your home at all.
