My Own Mother Is Trying to Evict My Family from Her Flat—How Could She Treat Us This Way?

My mum and I recently had a terrible row. We share the same flat, and she’s been trying to get me to move out for years now. Of course, she hasn’t succeeded, as I’m legally registered there. Over the years, I’ve heard countless arguments from her. I honestly wanted to get on well with my closest family.

Perhaps youd agree that still living with your mum at thirty in England isnt seen as ideal. I do see your point, but when my husband and I got married, we had no other option but to stay. Then we had the kids, so moving out simply wasnt possible.

We often dont have enough money anyway. My salary is quite modest, and my husband works freelance, so jobs can be unpredictable. Sometimes he doesnt get any work for weeks, and his earnings depend on it. Were scraping by, paying the car loan because we genuinely needed a vehicle. Mums not thrilled about that either.

And so, we still live together. Honestly, its easier to split the costs of bills and shopping. Plus, I can always leave the boys with her, which is a huge help. But for the last two years, my mum hasnt let up and keeps dropping hints about how we ought to buy our own home and move out.

I wish we could, but where are we supposed to get that kind of money? At first, her hints were subtle, and I explained calmly that we simply cant do it yet were gradually saving up. But as time went by, things became unbearable, and now we argue constantly.

My husband steers clear of the drama, since he doesnt want trouble with his mother-in-law, and I do understand, though I often miss his backing.

But what should he do, really? The obvious solution is to buy our own place, but that’s not going to happen until we finally finish paying for the car.

I get that Mum wants some peace in her retirement, but that doesnt justify pushing us out. Plus, shes mentioned several times she intends to leave me the flat in her will, so whats the point of moving around?

And then, recently, things blew up. We havent spoken since. My aunt passed away and left Mum a small one-bedroom flat.

I thought this was brilliant news Mum could move to the smaller flat and finally have her own space.

But Mum flatly refused to leave and wouldnt give us the other flat either. She said we simply needed to sort ourselves out.

Is that right? How are we supposed to carry on like this?

Sometimes, life doesnt work out quite as wed hoped. But I realise now that clinging to whats comfortable or familiar might turn our family against each other. In the end, finding peace means letting go of resentment and working towards independence, even if it takes longer than wed like.
