After giving birth to my daughter and raising her alone, my parents initially provided tremendous support – but their recent actions are absolutely unbelievable.

Ever since I learned I was going to be a father, I knew Id be raising my child on my own. When the mother of my child found out, she pleaded with tears in her eyes for me to terminate the pregnancy. I stood firm in my decision. Thankfully, my parents supported me wholeheartedly, encouraging me to go through with the birth and promising to take care of everything. And they kept their word. My partner vanished without a trace, but Mum and Dad were over the moon at having a granddaughter. Dad had a decent job and took care of all our financial needs. Mum was a diligent homemaker, keeping the house spotless and preparing meals for everyone.

Whenever I tried to contribute money to the household, Dad would hand it right back, saying, Why put the childs money here? Youd be better off spending it on your daughter. Likewise, if I ever offered to help Mum in the kitchen, she would insist, Dont trouble yourself. Spend time with your daughter; Ill handle the cooking. Eventually, as I returned to work, I began buying necessary household items, but my contributions were purely symbolic. Mum took full responsibility for the housework and looking after my daughter.

Everything seemed to be going smoothly until a man entered our family sphere. My parents became extremely anxious. Havent you learned anything? Theyre all the same. Hell leave you, and youll end up pregnant again! The older my daughter got, the more my parents tried to control her and me.

They treated me like a schoolboy. Mum would ring me constantly, asking where I was, when Id be home, enquiring about the voices in the background, who Id spoken to that day, what Id eaten. After work, Dad always insisted on accompanying me home. In time, another woman came into my life. When Mum heard about her and our upcoming date, she started clutching her chest, claiming heart troubles, and begged me not to leave her side. This situation took a toll on my relationship. My partner cancelled our date, then the next, then another. By the tenth time, she just stopped arranging meetings altogether, saying shed found someone whose mother was less overbearing and in better health.

Looking back, Ive learned that sometimes too much care becomes a cage. Support is invaluable, but independence is just as important. If I dont step out of my parents shadow, Ill never truly live my own life.
