My Younger Brother Chose to Live With His Mother-in-Law, and None of Us Understand Why He Did It… M…

My younger brother decided to move in with his mother-in-law, and to this day, none of us can quite work out what possessed him

My little brother tied the knot shockingly earlyjust 18. It was as if he was desperate to prove how independent he was, even if it meant sprinting straight out of the family nest without looking back.

From the moment he arrived home from hospital, cradled in Dads awkward arms, Id basically been his second parent. My own childhood did a vanishing act as soon as he started wailing in the next room. Then he grew up, got married, and moved outhis whole world was upended; though, lets be honest, not for the better.

His new wife? Well, she was also frighteningly young but boasted a personality as sharp as cheddar left out overnight. From the very first awkward dinner, none of us could warm to her. She was lacking in both subtlety and manners, and her appearance didnt stop traffic either. What my brother ever saw in her remains one of lifes great inexplicable mysteries. They both moved into a flat next door to hersor rather, her mothers. Her father was a thoroughly odd chap: the silent type whod rather nod than speak and could communicate whole conversations with a single eyebrow raise. The mother-in-law, meanwhile, was a world-class busybody, barking orders left and right like a sergeant major on a caffeine high. My brother was either being critiqued or outright condemned by her on any given day, with his wife adding her two pennies worth of disappointment at every opportunity.

Watching all this made my blood boil. I tried to reason with him, but hed just shrug and say everything was perfectly peachy, the wife adored him, they were blissfully content, yada yada yada. But over time, you could see bits of his soul slipping out his socks. He transformed into her fathera quiet presence who rarely voiced an opinion and communicated in grunts and nods. Eventually, his patience wore as thin as a cheap teabag. He reached the end of his tether; one day, he silently bundled up his things and walked out without so much as a backwards glance.

Id never seen my brother so washed out and gluma shadow of the boy whod once driven me round the bend with water fights and crayon masterpieces on my homework. He bitterly regretted marrying so young, as anyone would after such a battering.

Everyones patience has its limits. Once you hit yours, sometimes the bravest thing you can do is bow out quietly from a situation thats become utterly unbearable.
