She Retired and Felt Utterly Alone: Only in Her Old Age Did She Realise She Had Lived Her Life Wrong

After I retired, an overwhelming sense of loneliness settled in that I couldnt shake. It was only in my later years that I realised just how badly I had spent my life.

Many women think loneliness is a dreadful thing. They say true happiness is having a big family, endless worries, things to fuss over. Ive never agreed with that at all. I lived my whole life for myself. No one ever asked anything of me. I had no obligations. No ties.

After university, I started working for a large company in London that specialised in international travel. Id also done some modelling for a well-known agency. I managed to earn a good deal of money. My friends were all successful and wealthy too.

I thought of myself as a prosperous woman, having travelled all over the world. Throughout my life, Id dated men whose company I quite enjoyed, but whenever I lost interest, Id simply end things. I never once considered having children. Was I supposed to give up my free time for them? Was I to become one of those anxious mothers, constantly worrying over every little thing about her child? The responsibility frightened me.

Time seemed to slip through my fingers. Now, as a retired woman, I find myself entirely alone. I never married; I never had children. And now, in my old age, I deeply regret not having even one. At first, I had no desire, then I was too busy, and before I knew it, it was too late. I never believed motherhood was any guarantee of happiness.

Now, watching my sister with her two grown children and three grandchildren, I see how arrogant I wasnever listening to anyone. I truly want to turn things around: reconnect with my family, spend time with my nieces and nephews, perhaps even meet a man as lonely as I am to build a family with. Maybe, just maybe, theres still time to find that sense of connection and to understand that happiness is often found in the bonds we share, rather than the independence we guard.
