Today was truly one of those charming afternoons you just dont forget. We were having lunch out on the lawn at my friend Charlottes place in the Cotswolds, taking in that rare bit of English sunshine, when to our absolute astonishment, a young deer wandered straight up to us. The sight was so sweethe nibbled on the hedgerow leaves without a care in the world, completely unfazed by our group. It had us all smiling from ear to ear.
Just as we thought the scene couldnt get any more delightful, along bounced another tiny fawn. This little one, mischievous as anything, darted straight to Olivia and began licking her cheek! She let out the most surprised laugh, and the rest of us couldnt help but join in. Theres something so pure and magical about moments like that.
Id recently heard about a similar spectacle at the Surrey County Fair, where a foal made its debut in the parade. The young horse, named Archie, was born just a few weeks prior at Maplewood Stables in Surrey. When he stepped into the arena, he garnered instant cheers and camera flashes from the crowd. Rather than being shy or bewildered, little Archie absolutely thrived on the attentionstanding tall, ears alert, loving every second of the applause.
The other Clydesdales in the ring found his antics more perplexing, though. Archies excitable galloping sent the older horses scattering in every direction. The audience was in stitches at the unexpected chaos, and the video has since been watched by over a million people online. Who could blame them? Few things are more endearing or entertaining.
Incidentally, Archie isnt pure Clydesdalehes a lovely cross of Percheron and Shire lines, and his energy is absolutely infectious. Born on April 14th at Maplewood, hes already a local star.
Reflecting on todays peaceful yet extraordinary lunch, its reminded me just how wonderful the English countryside iswith surprises both great and small.
