I was in the middle of tidying up when my friend Alice gave me a ring. She interrupted my chores, urging me to come over as something big had happenedher partner, Thomas, had left her. Hed run off with another woman from our town, catching everyone completely off guard. We quickly gathered around her kitchen table to mark this significant change in her life.
Alice had been living with Thomas for some time, but theirs had always been a tempestuous relationship. The man was terribly jealous and possessive; he demanded all of Alices attention, was downright rude, and would even throw plates if the food didnt meet his expectations. His foul moods could stretch on for weeks, leaving Alice in complete silence.
Now, free from that toxic situation, Alice couldnt hide her relief. Thomas had always forbidden her from seeing her friends, worried we might steer her away from him. But now, she was excited at the thought of spending more time with us. We all shared stories about our own husbands anticstheir jealousy, their odd rules, all the suffocating pressure.
No one was quite sure how Thomas had met this other womanrumour had it he often popped round to see her, pretending it was for a bit of football training. Alice was left wondering if he would bother supporting his kids, and she even thought about getting the authorities involved if he didnt step up. We stayed with Alice late into the night, sipping tea and wine, recounting tales of our own failed romances.
A month passed before Thomas tried to return. When he showed up at the door, Alice greeted him with indifference. He had convinced himself shed welcome him back with open arms, but her cold stare caught him off balance. He asked what it was women wanted, and Alice answered calmly but firmly, Love and respect. Shed found new strength within herself, and she wanted nothing more to do with him. Thomas could only stare at her in astonishment.
It was that night I realised just how important it is never to surrender your self-worth for the sake of someone elses approval.
