I’m trying to accept my husband’s daughter from his first marriage, but I feel trapped since I’m already pregnant. In desperation, I’ve come up with a cunning plan.

When I married my husband, I was fully aware he had a daughter from his previous marriage. Her mother moved abroad and left her in his care. Unfortunately, the bond between them isn’t what you’d hope for; her mother’s occasional parcels and gifts don’t fill the voidshe misses her mum terribly.

At first, my stepdaughter lived with my mother-in-law, but eventually, she moved in with us. I had really wished we could build a strong relationship, but despite my best attempts, we never seem to understand each other. She keeps her distance and rarely acknowledges my efforts to communicate. Instead, she tries to get her way by enlisting support from her grandmother and her father whenever things dont go as she pleases. Its so frustratingI’m expected to look after and discipline her but lack the authority to do so, as neither my husband nor my mother-in-law steps in to set boundaries. As a result, shes becoming thoroughly spoiled and rather unruly.

I spend a great deal of time with her because my husband is often at work, and my mother-in-law only drops by for short visits. I feel completely overwhelmed and long for a breathersome time for myself or for my work. Yet, both my husband and mother-in-law criticize me for not being as gentle with her as they think I should be. If only they hadn’t put so much pressure on me, maybe we could have developed a better relationship.

Now, I honestly regret marrying a man with a child. Her behaviour, laziness, and messiness have truly shocked me. I know Ill never replace her mother or feel like a parent to her. Everything became even more complicated when I found out I was expecting, and theres no turning back.

Ive come up with a plan hoping she’ll choose to move back in with her grandmother, which seems to be my only way forward. I just want to create a healthier home for both of us. The main thing I’ve learnt through all this is that sometimes love isnt enough. A blended family needs boundaries, empathy, and support from everyonenot just blame piled onto one person.
