Twenty-six years ago, my parents wed, and our family enjoyed many contented years, without financial worries. Now, having been with my beau for six years, we decided the time had come to tie the knot and make our union official. Excited, I shared the news with my parents. My mother was thrilled and eagerly anticipated the day, but my father wasnt nearly as enthusiastic. He believed it was too soon and advised us to think carefully before making such a commitment.
Gradually, I understood the real reason behind my fathers hesitation. My mother kindly offered to give me her flat a property she had inherited from my grandmother believing that as a young couple, we could use some help. However, my father disagreed; he feared that if my husband, William, and I ever divorced, William would have a right to half the flat. We had inherited two flats from our grandparents: one was intended for my younger brother Henry, and the other for me. Yet this plan was entirely my mothers idea, while my father hoped to keep everything to himself, which led to heated arguments between them.
My mother felt strongly that parents ought to look after their children, and she insisted on handing the flat over to me. My fathers stance nearly caused a real upheaval. The situation reached a boiling point, and my mother, incensed by my fathers behaviour, told him to leave and forbade him from returning.
The impact of my wedding on my family, especially on my father, was beyond anything I expected. Now, two years on from our marriage, I feel happy. We live in the flat my mother gifted me, and I shall always be grateful for her kindness. Despite all the family tensions, my married life is fulfilling, and I cherish the support my mother has shown me throughout.
