“We’ll be crashing at your place for a while, since we can’t afford to rent an apartment! – My friend told me.”

Im an incredibly active woman. Even though Im 65 years old, I still manage to travel around England and meet fascinating people. I look back at my youth with both happiness and a hint of sadness. Back then, you could take a holiday anywhere you liked! You could go to the seaside. You could go camping with friends and colleagues. You could even take a river cruise. And you could do all of this for just a few pounds.

But those days are gone now.

Ive always enjoyed meeting new people. I made friends on the beach, at the theatre. Many of these connections have stayed with me for years.

I couldnt figure out who would send us such a telegram. Of course, my husband and I hadnt gone anywhere. But at four in the morning, someone knocked on our door. When I opened it, I was stunned. There, on the doorstep, stood Sarah, two teenagers, a grandmother, and a man. They had an enormous pile of luggage with them. My husband and I were absolutely lost for words. But then we let our uninvited guests into the house. Sarah turned to me and asked:

Why didnt you leave for us? We sent you a telegram! And besides, a taxi costs money!
Im sorry, but I had no idea who sent it!
Well, I had your address. So here I am.
I just thought wed write letters to each other, thats all!

Sarah then explained that one of the girls had finished school this year and was set to start university. The rest of the family had come to support her.

Well stay with you! We cant afford rent! And your place is near the city centre!

I was taken aback. After all, we arent even related. Why should we let them live with us? I had to feed all of them three times a day. They brought some food but didnt cook anything themselves. I ended up serving everyone.

I couldnt take it anymore, so after three days, I asked Sarah and her family to move out. I didnt care where to. A huge row broke out. Sarah started smashing dishes and screamed hysterically.

I was absolutely shocked at her behaviour. Then they left. They managed to steal my dressing gown, several towels and, unbelievably, my big pot of cabbage stew. I have no idea how they got it out. But the pot vanished as if into thin air!
