When I Stepped into the Elevator of Our Apartment Building, Inside Was a Woman Holding the Keys to My Flat.

When I stepped into the lift of our block, there was already a woman inside, holding the keys to my flat. At first, I thought I must have made some sort of mistake. But I hadnt. The keyring in her hand was unmistakablea small blue heart, a gift from my sister years ago.

The woman looked to be around forty, with short dark hair and a no-nonsense bag over her shoulder. She stood with an air of calm, as if this was utterly ordinary.

The lift began its slow climb upwards. My heart was racing.

Excuse me, I said. Those keys where did you get them?

She glanced at me, then at the keys, then back at me. And who are you? she asked, her words striking me like a slap.

I live in flat 12, I replied.

She froze for a moment, then answered softly, Thats odd.

Why? I pressed.

Because I live there too.

The lift stopped at the sixth floor, but neither of us moved. Silence settled between us.

Ive been living there for four years, I told her.

She gripped the keys tighter. I only signed my tenancy last month.

I stared at her. What tenancy?

She opened her bag and pulled out a folder. Inside was a copy of her rental agreement. The address matched mineflat 12.

A strange quiet followed.

Who gave it to you? I asked.

The owner, she replied.

Who?

George.

My stomach twisted. George was my cousin. Hed said I could stay in the flat while he worked abroad.

Hes the owner, I said quietly.

She nodded. Yes. He told me the flat was vacant.

The lift reached our floor, and the doors slid open. We both stood still. After a moment, she said, Perhaps theres been a mix-up.

Perhaps, I agreed.

We stepped out into the corridor. The door to flat 12 was right there. She lifted her keys. I did too. Both sets looked exactly the same.

An uneasy silence hung between us.

Sometimes, the worst feeling isnt discovering youve been lied to. Its realising you never had the truth to begin with.

I looked at her. Shall we open it?

She sighed. Yes.

Let me ask honestlyif you found out your home was given to someone else, would you try to calmly uncover the truth, or would you explode straight away?

Life teaches us that certainty is never guaranteed; sometimes, the grace lies in searching for answers before anger takes hold.
