Robert was travelling by train on a calm Wednesday morning, and the carriage was scarcely occupied. An elderly lady entered and took a seat beside him; it was clear she was headed to her countryside vegetable garden, much like Robert and several others in the carriage. Memories of his late wife washed over him. They used to visit their plot together, but after her illness, Robert had stayed away, haunted by loneliness and melancholy.
When the train stopped at the station, the elderly lady turned to Robert and uttered words that sent a chill through him: Today will be sunny and bright. Well have plenty of time to get something done. These were precisely the same words his late wife used to say. Taken aback, he nodded in agreement, and the two began talking, sharing thoughts about the poor harvest for the year, the harsh winter, and their hopes for the next season.
As they reached the bus stop, Robert realised he hadnt met this woman before. For a while, they walked together, then parted ways. Upon arriving at his own plot, he found the land had become overgrown during his long absence. Yet the conversation with the woman on the train had brightened his spirits, and he felt compelled to explore the plot once again.
With renewed energy, Robert set to work, digging beds and pulling up weeds. The satisfaction of seeing the rich earth encouraged him to refrain from selling the land for the time being. He enjoyed a break, sitting on a bench and savouring sandwiches and a cup of tea. The sight of his favourite flowers swaying nearby and ripe apples beneath a newly planted tree brought nostalgic memories rushing back.
His mood improved so much that he resolved to visit his plot more regularly. While picking mushrooms in the woods, Robert felt as though a burden had been lifted from his heart. He realised that keeping busy brought him happiness and purpose.
On his way home, Robert encountered the same elderly lady hed met earlier. They shared apples and laughed as they chatted about their work in the garden. The woman reassured him that there was still much life ahead of him, urging him to see his work as a source of joy and meaning. As Robert alighted at his station, he smiled at the setting sun, feeling content and no longer weighed down by sorrow.
In life, sometimes the simplest encounters can rekindle our hope, encouraging us to find purpose and happiness even in the midst of loss.
