My Daughter-in-Law Is Angry With Me Over the Apartment and Has Started Turning My Son Against Me

My son has fallen for a dishonest young woman who manipulates him as she pleases. Lately, shes been trying to turn him against me. She claims that I dont care about their happiness, saying I only think about myself. She came to this conclusion because I refused to swap homes with them.

My husband passed away several years ago, and my son is my only child. I raised him with love and care, providing him with a good education. Before he married, my son lived at home with us. He started working even while he was at university, and after graduating, he quickly landed a good job.

My son is my pride and joy. Hes a wonderful man and doing well in his career. My husband and I couldnt afford to buy our son a flat, as we always lived modestly. We only managed to purchase our own flat at the age of forty; before that, we rented, so there was never enough money for another property. But, after all, he can earn his own home. My husband and I did just that.

When Matthew told me hed started seeing a girl, I was delighted. I went out of my way to get along with my daughter-in-law: I never criticised nor scolded her. It didnt matter to me who she was; my only wish was for my son to be happy. At first, I really liked Emily, she was very polite and modest. But she only showed her true colours after the wedding.

Once married, Matthew and Emily went off on a honeymoon, and when they came back, Emily quit her job. She said her bosses picked on her and she wanted something better. But it didnt stop there. Shes been living off my son for two years now and has no intention of working.

Matthew and Emily moved into her tiny one-bedroom flat out in the outskirts of Manchester. Since Emily stays home, my son cant afford to buy a new flat, because Emily spends all his money on beauty treatments and clothes.

I cant fathom how someone cant find a job in two whole years. I suspect shes lying about attending interviews. Most likely, she enjoys life while having my son support her.

I once asked if they planned on having children. How can we talk about children when we live in such cramped space? Emily replied. What if you start saving for a deposit on a mortgage? I suggested. We barely make ends meet, theres nothing to save, Emily answered.

I held back from saying that, if she actually worked, they might have been able to save something by now. If they’d genuinely tried to save for a flat, I wouldve gladly helped, because I already have a decent amount tucked away. But now, I dont want to give them anything, knowing Emily would just squander it on frivolous things.

Recently, Emily started talking about having a child, complaining that time is slipping away and they must consider an heir. But is it really wise to raise a child in such circumstances? My son began to agree with her.

Mum, you know, Emily and I are thinking, why dont we exchange homes? Theres no need to make it official, we just swap, and thats it. We wont have to worry about a mortgage, and your space will be enough for you.

What my son said truly hurt. This idea wasnt his; its obvious Emily put him up to it. I told him that Id be too far from my work and, as they say, ‘old trees dont transplant well.’

You only have a few more years of work, and then well give you grandchildren, Emily said to me with a smile.

I rejected their generous offer because it made me uncomfortable. I have no desire to leave my home.

Afterwards, my son tried discussing it several more times, and his words stung even more. My son was never one to take advantage of anyone, but now his wife is encouraging him to do just that.

Lets go home. I told you, your mother doesnt care if we have children. She wouldnt lift a finger for us! Emily said to Matthew during their last visit.

Since then, my son hasnt reached out. He wont answer when I call, nor does he ring back. I dont understand why he acts this way; he isnt foolish, but whenever Emily is around, he seems to lose his senses.

Sometimes, when people are caught up in someone elses ambitions, they forget what truly matters: kindness, respect, and the bonds of family. In the end, its important to remember that no matter how much others push us, we must not betray ourselves or those who have always cared for us.
