My brother asked me for money I had spent years saving, and when I refused, our mother responded in the most appalling way imaginable

I live with my mum and juggle two jobs. I pay for my own groceries and utility bills, since mums entire pension goes towards supporting my older brother. I work hard to save enough money so one day I can buy my own flat. Balancing all my expenses with saving for the home I’ve always dreamed of is no easy task, but I remain committed to achieving my goal through discipline and determination.

Not long ago, my brother asked to borrow some money for a deposit abroad. Deep down, I knew he’d never give it back, so I calmly told him no. I explained that I needed my savings for my own flat. Unsurprisingly, he wasnt pleased and marched straight to our mum to complain.

My brothers financial situation is far from steady. Hes a taxi driver and does a bit of handyman work, so his earnings are all over the place. On top of that, he and his wife tend to splurge on unnecessary things, like pricey takeaways and luxury purchases. Their spending habits mean they barely make ends meet, despite having three children and no permanent home to call their own.

In contrast, I focus on saving and managing my money responsibly. Im content with my old mobile, while my brothers wife is always after the latest model on credit. When I refused to lend my brother the deposit, he took offence and complained yet again to mum.

Mum did her best to persuade me to help, even though he owed me from before. She made a generous offer: if I gave him the money, she’d sign over her flat to me. But I declined, not wanting to depend on inheriting from my mum.

While mum ultimately accepted my decision, things got complicated when my brother and his family decided to move in with her to save on rent. They didnt consider my situation, leaving me without a place to live. Mum assumed Id be fine since I had savings, and my brother cut off all contact with me.

Despite all the stress and tension with my family, I dont feel guilty about sticking to my decision. I believe I acted rightlyputting my own future and dreams first and managing my hard-earned savings in a responsible way.
