Ten years of marriagelong or short? Thats how many years Sarah has spent with Adam. Outwardly, they seem like the perfect English couple. But now, everything is changing because Sarah is expecting a baby.
They met not long after university. There was little time between their first date, moving in together, and getting married. Adam always made it clear that he didnt want children. For years, Sarah used contraception, but one day, it failed her. Seeing those two lines on a test left her reeling.
Shes at a loss as to how she should break the news to her husband. Quietly, Sarah goes to her GP in London, completing all the checks and an ultrasound to make certain the baby is healthy. Only then does she summon the courage to tell Adam. His reaction is immediate and furious. Sarah has never witnessed him so angry. He demands she get a termination. He warns her bluntly: if she refuses, hell file for divorce.
Sarah chooses, rightly, to keep the baby. The next morning, Adam packs his things and vanishes. Sarah assumes hes gone away, but Adam is actually keeping a careful watch over her every move, always lurking in the background. He hovers outside the ultrasound clinic and overhears the nurses announcing its going to be twins. After the birth, he quietly arranges to speak to the doctors at the hospital in Chelsea and meets the babies for the first timeunable to face Sarah herself.
One day, a nurse confides in Sarah that Adam has been coming to visit the twins. This pleases her, though she keeps her feelings in check. Eventually, Adam comes to her and says,
Sarah, Im sorry. Please, let me explain. When I was three, I lived with my mother. She was pregnant then, but my father didnt care. The birth came early. It was dreadful my mother died. I grew up alone. My twin brothers died the day after she did. Thats when I swore Id never be a father under those circumstances.
Sarahs tears flow freely as she hugs her husband. Her heart aches for him, forced to relive such tragedy. They reconcile naturally, starting over as a familynot as two, but as four.
As the years go by, Adam and Sarah remain madly in love. All theyve ever needed to be completely happy are their two lovely children by their side.
