When she was just four years old, Alice lost her mumher memories faded because of a tragic accident involving a neighbours car. Her dad devoted his life to raising her, but you could see how the years weighed heavy on him; the effort nearly wore him out before his time. Even so, despite all her father did for her, Alice barely visited him. Once she got married, her attention shifted mostly to her own world, only popping round to see him every now and then when it was convenient. She was working flat out, so she left the job of sending money to her dad in her husbands hands. But her husband didn’t like the idea of supporting someone he thought didn’t deserve it and was pretty reluctant about the whole thing.
Her dad didnt know about the struggles Alice had, and he held on to the hope she’d be there for him as he got older. Instead, a neighbour chimed in and convinced him to take her to court for financial support. Their meeting at court was intense and emotional. Teary-eyed, Alice looked at her dad and questioned his reasons for bringing her there.
Dad, were you really that desperate to see me that you had to drag me to court? she asked, her voice breaking.
With a heavy heart, her dad replied, Alice, I couldnt even afford bread for two days. I was hoping youd keep your promises. Maybe I did something wrong bringing you up
She shot back, You knew I was working all the time. Besides, my husband sent you money and bought you food. Stop trying to guilt-trip me. Her husband immediately backed her up.
The argument went round and round until finally, her dad revealed something that changed everything. He turned to Alice with tears pouring down his face. Ive got something important to tell you, he said quietly.
Alice paused, ready to listen, and her dad started sharing a story from years agoback when her mum was still alive. He described a day when her mum had found a cardboard box in their back garden, near the bins. Inside was a tiny baby girl. Her mum made the decision right then and there to raise that little girl as her ownAlice was that baby. Overcome with emotion, Alice found herself begging her dad for forgiveness. Right then, he dropped the whole legal case.
Later that day, in a quiet conversation, Alice learned her husband had never visited her dad, and the money she thought was being sent had actually just been squandered. Full of regret over the lost years, Alice decided to leave her husband and move in with her dad. The two found real happiness and comfort in being together again.
