There Will Be No Wedding
Lily stepped into the room and froze in the doorway. Standing before her in a bridal gown was Rachel and she looked absolutely stunning. The dress hugged her figure perfectly, and her eyes shimmered with a subtle, almost weightless happiness. Lily couldnt help her excitement.
My goodness, youre absolutely glowing! she exclaimed, her gaze fixed on her friend. Im so happy for you! At last youre able to move on, open your heart to new feelings, leave James in the past! Youre remarkable!
Rachel flinched almost imperceptibly; her smile vanished instantly. She hurriedly reached for the dresss fastenings, avoiding Lilys eyes.
Id best take it off, she muttered, deftly unfastening the tiny hooks along her side. Only two weeks left until the big day. If anything happens to this dress, Id never find another like it in time.
Lily bit her lip. She immediately realised shed gone too far. Why on earth did she mention James? Now, when Rachel finally had a decent man in her life, bringing up the past was exactly the wrong thing! James hadnt been worth a single one of Rachels tears especially after all hed put her through.
Once, Rachel had truly believed James was the one. She was convinced their relationship would last forever. But things began to fall apart. He started pulling away, making up reasons not to see her, then outright criticising her choices her friends, her ambitions, her dreams. He talked her into leaving a promising project at work, convinced her not to take an internship abroad, and in the end insisted she change careers entirely.
Rachels family simply didnt understand what was happening to her. They watched as she changed, as she lost herself, helpless to do anything. Attempts to discuss it only sparked arguments James had convinced her her family just didnt accept him and wanted to ruin their perfect love. The tension only grew, and eventually, Rachel stopped talking to her parents almost altogether.
Then, one day, he vanished. Simply left, no explanation, not even a goodbye letter. There was nothing left but a deep wound in her heart and a child, whom Rachel chose to keep, come what may.
Now, watching her friend hurriedly remove her wedding dress, Lily was racked by guilt. All she had wanted was to celebrate her friends happiness. She had certainly not meant to stir up old wounds…
Little Jamie was now four years old. He was a curious, lively boy, always questioning the world around him one day wondering why the sky was blue, another captivated by the clouds, another absorbed by beetles in the garden. His nursery teachers often praised his intelligence: Jamie caught on quickly, remembered poems easily, and listened intently to long stories.
The boy spent most of his time with his grandparents Rachels mum and dad. Happily, they took on his care and encouraged his development. They picked a nursery with extra English lessons, took him swimming, even enrolled him in dance class. Rachel visited Jamie several times a week, but never for more than an hour.
The reason was simple, and painful. Jamie looked astonishingly like his father the same dark curls, same shape of eyes, the same slightly mischievous grin. Every time Rachel looked at him she was swept back to days when she believed her family would be happy. She loved the boy with all her heart, was proud of his achievements, treasured his smiles. But along with her love, a sharp, aching pain would come. Whenever she took her son in her arms or gazed into his eyes, tears pricked her lashes. Shed look away, pretend she was fiddling with her clothes or searching her bag, before quietly weeping once he couldnt see.
One evening, Rachel picked Jamie up from her parents house. The boy was on the rug, bent over a jigsaw, his brow furrowed in concentration. On seeing his mum, he leapt to his feet, beaming with joy.
Mum, look! He tugged her over to the rug. Ive almost done it heres the little house, heres a tree, and here… here will be a dog!
Rachel crouched down beside him, trying to smile.
Its lovely, she said, ruffling his hair. Youre so careful and clever.
Jamie paused, then gazed up at her.
Mum, wheres my dad? Everyone else at nursery has a daddy, only I dont…
Rachel froze. Inside, everything tightened, but she tried to keep her voice calm.
I dont know, love. Your dads far away right now. But he thinks about you, he really does.
So why doesnt he call? Jamie frowned, as if grappling with a puzzle. I could tell him Ive learned to tie my shoelaces!
Hes… Hes just very busy, Rachel murmured, a lump rising to her throat. But Im sure hes proud of you.
Jamie thought for a moment, then nodded, reassured, and returned to his jigsaw.
All right. Then Ill finish this house, and Dad will know how clever I am!
Rachel sat beside him in silence, watching, swallowing back tears. She wanted to say more, to comfort him, but the words wouldnt come. Instead, she just gently stroked his hair, breathing in the scent of his shampoo, trying to savour this moment her son beside her, happy and trusting, no matter the questions she couldnt answer.
Despite everything, Rachel couldnt stop thinking about James. Deep down, she continued to make excuses for him. Maybe something dreadful had happened? Maybe he was in trouble, unable to contact her? Thoughts like this allowed her to keep going, to keep from falling into despair.
Her family had tried to speak frankly with her many times. Her mum gently hinted there was no sense living in the past, that she ought to focus on Jamie and her own life. Friends were more direct: He left you. Accept it and move on. But Rachel refused to listen. Shed argue with conviction, reminisce over happy memories, the promises hed made her. These conversations always ended in her retreating into herself, while friends and family, exhaling, withdrew.
That didnt mean Rachel did nothing. From time to time, shed check social media, ring old haunts where he might appear, even post online asking for help finding him. Something held her back from accepting hed simply left of his own accord and wasnt coming back.
Then, after five long years, someone entered Rachels life who finally began to thaw her heart. It happened almost by accident they met at a mutual friends birthday. Edward stood out to her right away. He was… dependable; theres no other word. Genuine, kind, attentive simply the best.
From the very first meetings, Rachel found she could truly be herself with him. Edward never forced her to pretend to be cheerful or upbeat. If she was tired, hed suggest heading home. If she wanted quiet, hed simply sit in companionable silence. He was exactly the sort of man shed hoped to find: steady, even-tempered, and, most importantly, sincerely in love.
You could see it in the smallest things the way hed remember her favourite coffee, the way hed remember her colleagues names and ask about them, how he effortlessly took care of day-to-day things. He was genuinely ready to lift her burdens, and, if truth be told, Rachel took full advantage of his affection.
What moved her most was the way Edward connected with Jamie. At their first meeting, Jamie eyed the unfamiliar man with suspicion, clutching Rachels hand. But Edward amazed her then and there: he crouched down to Jamies height and asked what cartoons he liked. Half an hour later, they were building a model together, and Jamie was enthusiastically showing off his favourite toys.
In time, Edward became a regular presence at Rachels parents house, where Jamie lived. Hed take the boy to the park, teach him to ride a bike, and read him bedtime stories. Once, catching them drawing together, Edward said, Id like to be a real dad to him. If youll let me, Id like to adopt Jamie.
Lily was genuinely happy for her friend. She could see Rachel changing: her eyes sparkled again, the constant trace of anxiety on her face faded, her smile became real, not forced. But today Lily had blundered by carelessly mentioning James in the conversation. She only hoped it wouldnt cause Rachel to slide back into gloom.
Yet Rachel surprised her by remaining calm.
Ive grown up, she said with a small smile, carefully laying out the dress on the bed. And I know now my feelings for James belong in the past. Sometimes I even regret naming my son after him. I was stubborn, wouldnt listen to anyones advice How did you all put up with me?
Lily lightly touched her arm.
Are you planning to bring Jamie home from your parents?
I am, Rachel replied, immediately serious. Edward thinks its important. Hes even suggested changing Jamies name he says itll be easier for me. Well have to update his birth certificate once we go through with the adoption anyway.
She paused, watching the rain slide down the windowpane.
I used to be afraid Jamie would always remind me of the past, she said. But now I see I was wrong. Hes my son, and he should have a proper childhood with two loving parents. Yes, Grandma and Granddad are wonderful, but they cant replace real parents and Edward understands that. He truly wants to be a father to him. You should see how attached hes become.
Great idea! Lily said brightly. You could even ask Jamie what name he likes best. Itll make the change easier for him.
Im not sure. I dont know what to do yet. Theres still time to think.
In truth, Rachel wasnt being completely honest. She still loved James. That love hadnt gone away, but it had come to nothing good. Her parents were increasingly reluctant to let her see her son, as every visit shed start to cry and scare the boy. Friends didnt want to hear about her sorrows anymore and doubted her sanity behind her back. It really was time to let go of the past and focus on the present.
On the wedding, for example.
But that was easier said than done.
Edward was, without question, a good man but he simply wasnt James. Rachel didnt share deep feelings for him, merely using his affection to suit herself.
If James came back She would give anything to be with him again…
***************************
Therell be no wedding! Rachel declared, eyes blazing and nearly skipping with excitement. Were parting ways like ships in the night!
Edward stared at her blankly, trying to take in what she was saying. There was only a week left to the wedding the menus were set, flowers chosen, guests invited. It all seemed so real, so close. And now she was saying thered be no wedding?
What do you mean, no wedding? he tried to understand if she was being serious, or if this was some ill-advised joke. Rachel, whats happened? Please, explain.
But Rachel merely waved off his questions. She darted around the room, grabbing clothes off shelves and throwing them into an open suitcase. Her eyes sparkled, a smile played on her lips not the usual one, but bright and genuine.
James came back! she blurted out, not looking at Edward. In her voice was such unmistakable happiness that his insides turned cold. He arrived yesterday, we talked it all through I couldnt believe it at first!
She finally stopped and faced him, not a flicker of regret in her eyes just excitement and impatience.
Im grateful to you for these past months, she went on, her tone softening a little. It was calm, comfortable Youre a wonderful man, Edward. But I never truly loved you. And now I have a chance for real happiness I cant waste it.
Edward felt an icy emptiness slowly spreading in his chest. James. It was always James. The man Rachel spoke of with such longing that Edward couldnt help but feel like a spectator. Hed known she still thought of him, but had hoped that time and their life together would change her feelings.
Have you even spoken to him? he managed at last, voice tight, almost as if he couldnt get enough air. What story has he given you now?
He didnt make any excuses, Rachel replied, almost sharply. He just said he realised the mistake he made. That hes been thinking of me all this time!
She turned away again to continue packing, while Edward stood still, feeling the world lose its colour.
We spoke on the phone, she continued, rummaging through the desk. His parents forced him to study abroad and he couldnt warn me. Can you imagine? All this time, he couldnt get in touch, yet I was always on his mind! But now everything will be different well be together and live happily ever after!
Rachels mind replayed that first phone call with James after the long separation. His voice had been so emotional, a little shaky:
Rachel, I know this all looks dreadful. But listen my parents basically gave me an ultimatum. Study abroad in London or theyd cut me off. I did try to resist, honestly but they blocked my cards, shut down my accounts. I didnt even have my own phone.
Why didnt you even call me once? Rachels voice wavered, but she tried not to show her hurt.
I couldnt. What was I supposed to say? Admit I was a coward, did what my parents told me?
Back then, listening to his awkward explanations, Rachel felt a warmth flush through her. All the grievances, all the bitterness of the last few months seemed to dissolve into the sound of his voice. She realised shed waited for this call every day every hour.
Ill never leave you again, James said. Ive dropped out, Im back Im not going anywhere.
Those words echoed in her mind as she now stood before Edward.
She paused, glanced quickly around the room as if checking shed forgotten nothing. Only then did she notice Edward had gone pale. His face was almost white, his eyes fixed on some distant spot, as though he were looking clean through her.
Dont worry, Rachel added, gentler but still firm. Ive already told everyone the weddings off explained it, asked them to leave you alone. Youll get plenty of sympathy, but youre strong, youll manage.
She wheeled her suitcase closer, adjusting the handle as if it was the most important thing in the world. She looked at Edward one last time; there was no regret, no hesitation in her eyes.
And please, dont call, dont text, dont leave voicemails, she said, her tone firm, almost commanding. My decision is final, and nothing will change it.
She hoisted the suitcase up, wavering slightly at the weight, but straightened and strode to the door, as if fearing any delay might undermine her resolve.
Edward stood in the centre of the room, heart clenched tight with pain and confusion. He took a deep breath, trying not to lose composure. He wanted to shout, to demand an explanation but stopped himself. He would not let himself look desperate. He clenched his fists, then slowly released them, striving to speak calmly, even flatly.
Are you sure you arent rushing? he asked, carefully watching Rachel.
She paused at the door, gripping the suitcase handle, but didnt turn. Her shoulders were tense, fingers white-knuckled on the leather.
What if he wont get back together with you? Edward continued, stepping closer. What if he refuses to acknowledge your son? Has he even proposed yet?
Rachel turned abruptly. Her cheeks glowed with excitement and irritation. She strode towards Edward as if to drive home her point.
Hes asked me for a serious talk! she blurted. Thats enough! And dont you dare criticise him James isnt like that!
Her voice shook, but she quickly recovered herself, straightened up, and tugged the suitcase towards the door again.
You could help, you know, she muttered, struggling with the heavy case.
Edward instinctively stepped forward, ready to help, but caught himself. Why should he help someone whod trampled on his feelings? He could clearly see Rachels mind was elsewhere already with James. Her eyes sparkled with certainty, almost giddy: soon, a whole new life would begin, full of happiness and love. She clearly imagined James greeting her with a beaming smile, telling her everything would be all right, at last theyd be together.
But reality was quite different. James, whod invited her for this serious conversation, had no intention of proposing or pledging eternal love. He wanted simply to explain himself, close the old chapter, and start anew but no longer with Rachel. Especially as he was seeing someone else now.
Rachel, swept along by her own fantasies, couldnt see what was right in front of her. She had waited for this moment so long, she was prepared to believe anything, just to keep hope alive.
Having finally hauled her suitcase to the door, she paused for a second, rested her palm on the handle as if about to speak but changed her mind, flung open the door, and left without a backward glance.
Edward stood in the middle of the room, staring at the closed door. Her perfume still lingered faintly in the air, her final words still ringing in his ears: James isnt like that!
He slowly slumped onto a chair, exhaustion hitting him like a tidal wave. It had all happened so quickly, so irreversibly. Now he would have to learn to live with it without Rachel, without plans for the future, without illusions…
***************************
James opened the door, surprised by such an early visit. There was Rachel, standing on the threshold with two suitcases, her face radiant and her eyes glowing with anticipation. He froze, speechless. One thought went round and round in his head: How could she get this so wrong?
He thought it was all settled long ago. Once Rachel started seeing Edward, James had finally breathed a sigh of relief. Now he could safely come back to his hometown and live here with his wife, without fear of impromptu calls, tears and accusations. Hed even thanked Rachel in his mind for finding someone else it had solved everything in one go.
True, hed called her and tried to say things had changed, even suggested they meet on neutral ground, but that was pure formality!
And now here she was, at his door with all her belongings, expecting something more than a simple talk. James instinctively stepped back, trying to collect his thoughts.
James! Rachel exclaimed, as soon as she saw him. Its settled Im here, and at last we can be together!
Her voice was so certain, as if there could be no alternative. She stepped forward, but James lifted a hand to stop her.
Rachel, wait… he began gently. Theres something you probably dont know.
She frowned; her smile wavered and faded.
What are you talking about? We agreed to meet and talk everything through!
James sighed deeply, knowing this moment was unavoidable.
Im married, Rachel. For two years now. My wife and I are very happy together.
Rachel stopped dead. Her eyes widened in shock. She was silent for a few seconds, as if unable to believe what shed heard. Then her features contorted panic, hurt, and outrage mingling on her face.
What are you saying? she whispered, shaking her head. It cant be… You called me, you said everything had changed!
I called to say goodbye properly, James replied softly. I wanted to explain that time had moved on, that we each have our own lives now. But you took it differently, I guess.
Rachel stepped back, her hands shaking. She clenched her fists, trying to hold herself together, but emotion overflowed.
You you were lying to me all this time! she shouted, her voice trembling with anger. How could you? I gave up everything for you!
James felt a flare of irritation. He didnt want a scene, didnt want to justify himself, but Rachel clearly wouldnt leave without an argument.
I never promised you anything, he said firmly. You decided all by yourself that wed be together. I tried not to hurt you, thats all. But now, surely, you see?
Rachel shrieked, grabbed one of the suitcases, and hurled it into the hallway; her things scattered everywhere, but she didnt care. She screamed, accused, demanded explanations, her voice rising louder and louder.
James finally had to politely but firmly see her out onto the pavement. He shut the door, praying this was the end of it. But Rachel wouldnt relent; she knocked on the door, shouted his name, pleaded. Neighbours started peering out, muttering and complaining.
After an hour, when her shouting had grown even louder and neighbours genuinely threatened to call the police, Rachel finally left. As she turned to go, she glared at Jamess door and, through her tears, cried:
Ill be back! Youll regret this!
James closed his eyes, exhaustion washing over him. He knew this wasnt the end. Rachel was stubborn, and when she wanted something, she didnt give up easily.
He went into the lounge, sat on the sofa, and thought hard. He needed to act fast. He couldnt stay in this flat any longer Rachel could come back at any time, causing a scene, disturbing the neighbours. James pulled out his phone and opened a property website.
I need to sell this place and find somewhere new, he decided. Preferably on the other side of town
*********************
Rachel walked down the street, blind to everything around her. Tears stung her eyes, thoughts whirled in fragments through her head, her heart felt heavy, empty. She still couldnt quite grasp what had happened. In her mind, James was supposed to open the door with open arms, say hed been waiting for her, that now they could finally be together. Reality was brutally different.
She wandered the city for hours, trying to pull herself together. Her feet carried her to Edwards flat. Rachel paused outside, wiped her tears, straightened her hair she wanted to look composed, at least a little. She took a deep breath, climbed the stairs and nervously rang the bell.
Edward didnt answer right away. When he finally appeared, his face was cold and distant. He stared at Rachel without moving, making no attempt to invite her in.
Edward, please, she began, her voice trembling. I know what I did. I realise how foolish and cruel it was. But I I want to put things right.
She stopped, searching for the right words. Tears shone in her eyes again.
Ill never mention Jamess name ever again, she continued, looking him straight in the eye. I mean it. All of that was a mistake. I realised I can only ever be happy with you. Please, give me a chance.
Her voice was sincere, almost desperate. In that moment, Rachel truly believed what she was saying she felt, if Edward could forgive her, everything might be salvaged.
Edward shook his head slowly. No, he wasnt falling for it a second time.
Rachel, he said quietly, you already made your decision. Just hours ago, you stood in my flat with your suitcases and told me you were leaving for him. You were certain.
I was wrong! she cut in. I didnt realise what I was doing! I was emotional! I
Edward sighed, running a hand through his hair. It wasnt easy, but he knew he couldnt let his emotions rule him again.
You didnt just leave me, he said, you left for him. You made your choice, and I accepted it. And now, only because it went badly, you want to come back?
Yes! Rachel blurted. Because I love you only you.
He hesitated a few seconds, then gave a bitter little laugh and, unexpectedly firm, declared:
I dont believe a word of it anymore. Goodbye.
Rachel felt everything inside her collapse. Edward regarded her calmly, without anger, but there was not a trace of doubt in his eyes. He truly didnt believe her anymore.
Please… she whispered, but the words died in her throat.
Im sorry, he said. But its for the best for both of us.
He closed the door, leaving Rachel alone in the empty corridor. She stood still for a few moments, then slid down onto the stairway, buried her face in her hands and wept. This time, her tears werent from anger or hurt but from the bitter realisation she had lost James, lost Edward, and now had no idea what to do next.
