Elephant Rescued from Captivity Lies Down on the Ground for the First Time in 80 Years

Diary Entry

Today, for the first time in my life, I saw true rest in the eyes of an elephant.

Let me write down this story, as it has left an indelible mark on my heart. We rescued an elderly elephantnow called Matildafrom a life she never chose. As a calf, Matilda was stolen away from the wilds of Africa and sold into captivity. Decades went by as she was forced to spend her days on her feet, carrying tourists on her backrobbed of any chance at the peaceful existence an elephant should know.

Only this year were we finally able to intervene and bring her the care she has always deserved. Our charity, Save the Elephant, orchestrated a rescue and made all the arrangements to move her to the Ashdown Nature Reserve.

We collected Matilda at the end of January, taking her far from the holiday park where shed spent her entire life in service. She arrived in very poor healthshe was emaciated, had lost nearly all her teeth, and her skin was dry and cracked. But as soon as she set foot in the peaceful pastures of Ashdown, we knew she was at last safe and would be watched over by experts who truly cared about her wellbeing.

As the keepers have often told me, many elephants reaching our reserve arrive traumatised and wary. Years of mistreatment make them suspicious of kindnessso many refuse to lie down and rest, fearing what might happen if they let their guard down. Miraculously, Matilda wasnt one of those. Eighty years of unrelenting labour left her utterly exhausted, and on her first night with us, she finally dared to rest on the soft earth. She slept so deeply that next morning she struggled to stand, her body unused to real sleep. We noticed at once and rushed to her side, making sure she was safe and comfortable.

Now, as Matilda grows accustomed to her new life, we keep a constant watch over her. Were doing everything possible to make this dramatic change as gentle as it can be. Her path to recovery will be longmade necessary by all shes enduredbut every day shes growing a little stronger. Her meals are designed to help her regain strength, and she enjoys slow strolls around the park and healing mud baths. Shes learning, slowly but surely, that its alright to be at peace now.

For the first time, she is living the free and restful life that every creature deserves. I find immense comfort and hope in watching her rediscover a world without crueltya world that lets her simply be an elephant.
