28th February
Today has left me with such a mix of emotions that I simply must put pen to paper. I can hardly believe whats transpired. I was one of the volunteers lucky enough to witness the rescue of Edith, a remarkable elderly elephant who has spent her entire life in captivity here in England. Ediths story is heartbreaking she was stolen from the wild as a youngster and made to work for decades, carrying tourists on her back, day in and day out. Never once did she live the life nature meant for her.
I keep thinking about what the folks from the Save the Elephant Trust said: Its finally Ediths turn to be cared for as she deserves, and to experience proper rest. The team pulled together a valiant effort to rescue her and transport her to the New Forest Elephant Sanctuary, where shes safe at last.
When Edith arrived at the sanctuary at the end of January, she wasnt in a good way; her body was frail, her teeth all but gone, her skin cracked and dry from neglect. But finally, she could breathe easy, away from crowds and noise, watched over by a team who truly understand elephants.
I learned from the sanctuary staff that newly rescued elephants often remain wary for a long time. Many develop paranoia, trusting no one after years of poor treatment. Heartbreakingly, some are even too nervous to lie down and rest, afraid of what might happen. But Edith was so world-weary from her eighty years on her feet that she found comfort quickly; she was absolutely exhausted.
During her first proper night of sleep, Edith was so deeply at rest that the next morning she couldnt get up. The caretakers spotted her straight away and rushed to her side, quietly supporting her and making sure she was comfortable until she recovered her strength. The staff monitor her every move, gently guiding her through her new life and trying to make her transition as smooth as possible.
Ediths healing is only just beginning. She has a long journey ahead to recover from everything she has endured all these years. But with nourishing meals, leisurely walks in the English countryside, and daily muddy baths, shes already showing signs of improvement. It warms my heart to see her discovering this peaceful existence.
For the first time, Edith is living as she was always meant to with freedom, safety, and dignity. And I feel so privileged to witness her beginning this well-deserved new chapter.
