Poppy Hartley arrives at the hospital alone, with no one to support her during labour. And the instant her baby is born, Dr Edward Hartley catches one look and notices something that makes him cry… ‼
She has come in on her own. Her husband, Matthew Hartley, walked out a few months earlier, right after finding out she was pregnant.
The labour lasts for hours, but at last the newborn’s first cries ring around the room. Everything has gone well, and the baby is perfectly healthy.
Dr Hartley gently takes the little boy in his arms to pass him to Poppy, but then something strange happens.
Just as he is about to hand the baby over, he stops. His hands tremble slightly. He studies the baby’s face, then looks at the young mother, and his eyes fill with tears.
‘Doctor, is everything all right?’ Poppy asks, worried.
The doctor nods, unable to speak for a few seconds. Then, in a shaky voice, he whispers something that leaves Poppy frozen on the spot.

The doctor has noticed a small birthmark on the baby’s arm.
He recognises it immediately: it is exactly the same as the birthmark his own son had. His son disappeared years ago, and he has had no contact with him since.
His heart sinks.
Poppy follows his gaze, concerned, and asks what is going on.
The doctor takes a deep breath, tears in his eyes, and explains that the mark is identical to his son’s, which means the baby is his grandson.
Poppy feels the world sway around her.
The loneliness she has been feeling during labour fades away, replaced by a deep and overwhelming emotion.
She holds her son tightly, while the doctor, moved beyond words, realises that this tiny child has just healed a bond broken long ago.
