After her father left the family, Emily developed a strong resentment towards him. Despite his promises to stay in touch regularly, she wanted nothing to do with him. Still, her grandmother persistently urged her to call him, reminding her that he was still her father and that she ought to keep some connection. Emily found this difficult to understand, especially as her own mother refused to speak to her ex-husband. Yet, not wanting to upset her mother, Emily agreed to see her father every now and then.
Once, she was pulled out of school during lessons so she could meet him. Her teacher clearly disapproved, although there wasnt anything she could do since Emilys own father came to collect her. At his home, Emily overheard her classmates gossiping about a possible younger sister. At first, she refused to believe it, but the truth became undeniable the moment she saw her fathers new family, including his wife and their small daughter. Emilys stepmother treated her kindly, showing concern for her and even asking about her homework. Meanwhile, her father remained aloof, glued to his computer and barely engaging with either of his daughters.
As time went on, her father took Emily out more often and began asking her to help look after her young half-sister. Emily hated the responsibility and refused to see the girl as her sister. Still, she felt pressured to play along and keep up the appearance of a normal relationship with her father, just as her mum and grandmother wanted. When asked to stay at her dads house for longer stretches, Emily refused, saying she had homework to finish. Her father appeared unfazed and instead suggested she look after her young half-sister while he and his new wife went out for the evening.
Feeling insulted and ignored, Emily finally reached her breaking point and decided she would not return to her fathers house. When he called, asking where she was and reminding her of her supposed responsibility to her half-sister, Emily stood her ground. She refused to be treated as a free child-minder. She pointed out that her father rarely spoke to her, expecting her to look after his daughter while he focused on his own interests. The lack of gratitude and attention drove an even deeper wedge between them, ultimately severing their relationship.
Later attempts by her father and his wife to reconnect proved fruitless. Eventually, Emily confronted her father, demanding an explanation for his actions. His response was blunt: someone had to help with the youngest child, and he didnt even bother pretending he missed Emily.
In the end, the rift between Emily and her father remained unresolved, with no chance of reconciliation in sight. Her fathers behaviour had done irreparable damage to their relationship, leaving Emily feeling unappreciated and used.
