Ive known Adam since we were kids. We grew up on the same street, knocking about together as best mates. As teenagers, wed gather our little group and head into the centre of Manchester. Sometimes wed just wander about, other times wed plonk ourselves on a bench and people-watch. Looking back, we never took relationships with girls seriously at that age we were far more worried about what the lads would think, keen not to make fools of ourselves in front of them.
Eventually, I signed up for the army, but Adam managed to avoid it somehow. Once my service was done, I landed a job, settled down, and got married. My wife and I spent ten years together, raising two children. But over time, we became strangers living under the same roof. The arguments crept in and it became clear we were better off apart. The divorce came not long after.
Two years passed. Newly single, I bumped into Adam by complete coincidence. Hed changed so much in those twelve yearsput on a fair bit of weight and seemed almost unrecognisable.
We caught up in a cosy café, swapping stories. Turns out Adam had divorced as well and was on the lookout for a new partner. A year slipped by, and I found love again, married a wonderful woman. As fate would have it, I ran into Adam once more, only to discover he too had remarried. I have to admit, I didnt take to his wife. She was rather heavyset, and I couldnt quite understand Adams taste.
So, what do you see in her? I asked, unable to hide my curiosity.
Adam grinned, explaining shes an excellent homemaker and an even better cook. Plus, she gives me peace of mind, he said. I can have a pint and watch the football, nip down the pub with the lads whenever I fancy. Shes spot onnever puts her foot down, lets me be.
I was honestly taken aback. For me, a partner means much more than keeping the house sorted or whipping up tasty meals, though those are nice. What matters most is the love we share. Of course, I appreciate a tidy home and delicious supper, but I long for that deep connectiona sense that were truly in sync and respect each other. Its wonderful when a couple shares interests and enjoys spending time together. My wife and I often cook and tidy up as a team.
When two people are on the same bike, pedalling together in the same direction, they stand a much greater chance of reaching their destination.
Do you agree with me?
