A Mother-in-Law Tore Us Apart, But Destiny Reunited Us

Mother-in-Law Who Shattered Our Marriage, but Fate Brought Us Back Together

Love That Began in Our College Days
Andrew and I tied the knot while still in university. Many remarked that I was being opportunistic – a girl from the provinces trying to secure her place in London, while my husband was a sophisticated, talented artist with a poetic soul.

I understood that Andrew wasn’t one to handle everyday life issues. He could lose himself for days in painting, translating poetry, and pondering life’s mysteries, without a thought for how we would manage financially. I knew it would be up to me to carry the weight of our family life.

And I was ready for it.

What I couldn’t foresee was that the real battle would not be with life’s daily grind, but with a person who would barge into our marriage like a storm, sweeping everything away.

Mother-in-Law – A Test of Endurance
It took me a while to realize how controlling his mother was.

She loved Andrew as only a mother could love an only son.

But her love wasn’t nurturing – it was about control, about keeping him close and under her influence.

I was seen as a threat.

Every day she made it clear to me that I wasn’t suitable for her son.

I felt it in her looks, her half-hinted remarks, and her biting comments.

“You’re not from our world,” she would say. “A provincial girl with mercenary habits trying to secure your place through my son.”

And I endured it.

I endured it for a long time.

But that wasn’t the worst part.

We lived together for ten years, but children never came.

Doctors assured me there was nothing wrong, yet the much-desired pregnancy never happened.

Every word she uttered, every glance, was a reminder that I hadn’t lived up to her expectations.

I couldn’t give her grandchildren.

One day she outright told me:

“You know, if you were truly a woman, you would have had children by now.”

And at that moment, something in me broke.

I packed my things and left.

A Divorce That Wasn’t Finalized
Andrew was shocked at first. He tried to win me back, but he didn’t fight for our marriage wholeheartedly.

Then he realized we needed to move away from his mother.

We spent two weeks alone – traveling, enjoying the seaside, trying to remember who we once were.

And when I was on the brink of severing all ties, a miracle happened.

I found out I was pregnant.

I halted the divorce.

And for a few more years, we were happy.

When our daughter, Vera, was born, I thought it would change everything.

But it didn’t.

As soon as Vera grew older, his mother was back to making decisions.

She decided where Vera went, what she did, who her friends were.

And Andrew?

He retreated into his canvases and books, leaving me to fight alone.

I held out until Vera finished school and went off to study.

Then I realized I couldn’t endure it any longer.

I filed for divorce again.

And this time, to make sure I wouldn’t back out – I left to work abroad.

Love Doesn’t Always Die
I visited a few times a year but never set foot in the house where I had spent the toughest years of my life.

Even after his mother passed away, I avoided going through the door.

Andrew tried to convince me to stay.

He said it would be better for Vera if we were a family again.

But I just couldn’t do it.

Until someone new appeared in our lives.

Our grandson, Martin.

His arrival changed everything.

Watching Andrew hold him with such delight, hearing him talk excitedly over Skype about Martin’s first tooth, or his worry when the baby had a fever, I realized I couldn’t keep my distance any longer.

I started visiting more often.

At first, just to be around.

Then, to stay longer.

And one day, I understood I didn’t want to leave anymore.

I moved back to the house where I had once struggled to breathe.

His mother was gone.

There was only Andrew.

And I discovered that we had never stopped loving each other.

We had just let circumstances drown out that love.

But now I know for sure – this time, I won’t leave.
