A woman in her late sixties walked into a clothing shop. Her hair was unbrushed, her clothes were worn-out, and her sandals looked scuffed. In her hands, she carried a crumpled plastic bag, and her face… well, it just looked exhausted. The moment she stepped inside, two shop assistants started giving her sideways glances. “She’s not gonna buy anything,” one whispered. “Probably just here to look around,” the other muttered.
The woman, her voice barely above a whisper, asked if they had any party dresses. The assistants exchanged glances, and one of them replied, “What d’you want a dress like that for? We sell proper posh stuff here.” The woman didn’t answer. She just looked down. But instead of leaving, she kept browsing the racks… until suddenly, she grabbed a red dress, clutched it to her chest, and smiled. “This one’s perfect,” she said.
The assistants shot her mocking looks until one stepped closer. “That’s over five hundred quid. You sure you can pay for it?” The woman pulled an old envelope from her bag and emptied it onto the counter. Notes, coins, some crumpled, some a bit grubby—but there it was, every penny counted. The assistants fell silent.
“Who’s the dress for?” one asked, her tone suddenly softer. The woman’s eyes welled up as she answered, “For my daughter. It’s her eighteenth today. I had her when I’d given up hope of ever being a mum. The doctors said I couldn’t… but she was a gift. She passed two months ago, but I promised her… on her birthday, I’d bring her the dress she loved most. And this one… this was the one. She showed me a photo of it before she left.”
