The early morning sun filtered through the clouds as my father drove his Ford up the winding lane to his office in London. Pulling into the petrol station for fuel, he glanced out the window and noticed a young woman, no older than nineteen, standing near the pumps, visibly pregnant and shivering in the crisp air. She was quietly asking passersby for some spare change.
As he paid for his petrol, she approached and asked if he could help. He shook his head ruefully, apologising that he didnt have any coins on him, then slipped back into his car, intending to drive off.

Charlotte called the next day. My father invited her to meet at his office, a modest but tidy space not far from Piccadilly. She arrived on time, nervous but determined, and he sat down with her for an interview. He offered her a position answering calls and running minor errands.
Within a week, Charlotte began her new job, gradually growing in confidence and capability. Over the months, she proved herself, and my father promoted her, eventually making her one of his assistant directors.
