**Diary Entry**
I was trudging home from work, bone-tired as usual, my mind wandering between thoughts of dinner and tomorrows meeting. Then, out of nowhere, a voice called from behind:
Excuse me! Emma Whitmore?
I turned. A young woman stood there, a boy of about six at her side. Her tone was uncertain, but her gaze steady.
Im Sophie, she said. And thisthis is your grandson, Oliver. Hes six now.
At first, I thought it was some cruel joke. Neither of them looked familiar. The shock made my head spin.
Sorry, but you must be mistaken? I managed to say.
Sophie pressed on, undeterred.
No mistake. Your son is Olivers father. Ive kept quiet for years, but you deserve to know. Im not asking for anything. Heres my number. If you want to meet him, call me.
With that, she walked off, leaving me frozen on the pavement, clutching the scrap of paper, my fists tight. I rushed to ring my only son, Daniel.
Daniel, did you ever date a Sophie? Do you have a child?
Mum, come on It was nothing serious. She was a bit odd, then claimed she was pregnant. No idea if it was trueshe vanished after that. Doubt hes mine.
His words unsettled me. Id always believed in him. Raised him alone, working two jobs to give him a better life. Hed built a respectable career but never started a family. Id often nudged him about grandchildren, longing to be a grandmother. And now, out of the blue, one appears?
The next day, I phoned Sophie. She wasnt surprised.
Oliver was born in April. No, I wont do a DNA test. I know who his father is. Daniel and I split during the pregnancy. I didnt reach out sooner because I managed alone. My parents help. Were fine. Im only here for Oliverhe deserves to know his grandmother. You can be part of his life, if you want. If not, I understand.
I hung up and sat in silence. Part of me couldnt ignore Daniels doubts. Yet Id seen something familiar in Oliverhis smile, his mannerisms. Or was it just my longing talking?
That night, I stared out the window, remembering mornings walking Daniel to school, shared meals, his first day in uniform. Had he really walked away from a pregnant woman? Or was this boy not his?
Still, despite everything, warmth stirred in me at the thought of Oliver. And anger, tooat myself for doubting. I hadnt demanded proof when Daniel was born. Why ask it of Sophie? Why couldnt I just believe?
I made no decision. I didnt call back. But every time I walked down that street, I scanned the faces. I didnt know if Oliver was my grandson. Yet I couldnt forget him. A grandmothers dream doesnt fade so easily. Maybe one day, Ill dial that number. Just to meet the boy who called me Gran.
Sometimes, family isnt about blood. Its about heart. And embracing the unknown might bring the loveliest surprises.
