After I told my wife that her daughter wasnt my responsibility, the truth about our family finally came out.
Many years ago, John had been the eternal bachelor in our family. Even his younger brother was already settled, married with a couple of children. Johns luck in love had never blossomedevery attempt to find a suitable wife had ended in disappointment. Our relatives were relentless, forever asking when they’d see him walk down the aisle. In truth, John had been ready for marriage for quite some time, and by the time he reached thirty-four, he finally declared hed had enough of bachelor life.
One evening, he visited a club in London where he ran into a colleague enjoying the night with a lady friend. Pleasantries were exchanged, and conversation flowed easily.
Its good to see you, George. Whats brought you out this evening?
Evening, John. My friends visiting from out of town. Thought Id show her the sights.
Would you introduce us?
Of course. This is Alice.
Welcome to London, Alice. Im John.
Its lovely meeting new people. Lets be friends.
May I consider you a friend, then?
Id like that.
Alice was graceful, reserved, yet confidenteverything about her charmed John. As their talk deepened, he learned that Alice had a daughter, Olivia, who was still at school. At first, John was unsure about stepping into a ready-made family, but the idea grew on him, and he saw no real harm in it.
Before long, they were living together. Life seemed joyful. Olivia was often busy with her studies, music lessons, and extracurriculars. During holidays, her mother would send her off to her grandmothers place in the countryside.
Alice held firmly that she neednt work, since John earned more than enough to support the entire household. Yet over time, John noticed Alices expectations were rising. She wanted Olivia enrolled in private lessons and additional clubs, not just the ordinary groceries or household bills.
John, I need extra money for Olivias new art lessons. Can you spare a bit more this time?
Of course, Im keen for her to develop her talents.
But day by day, the costs mounted. Prices seemed to rise ceaselessly. Inevitably, Johns patience ran thin. He finally shared his concerns with Alice.
Alice, Olivias teacher rang yesterdaytheyre planning a trip.
And?
I want my daughter to go, too, but its expensive. All the other parents agreed. Theyre waiting on us.
Alice, Ive grown weary of all these endless expenses for various activities. Why is it her own father doesnt contribute at all?
You knew I had a daughter. You accepted that. Had you meant to be hard and selfish, you wouldnt have stayed. Im shocked by your attitude.
With those words, Alice burst into tears and locked herself away in her bedroom. John reflected, then apologised, and gave her the money she needed, but a sour feeling lingered. He couldnt understand why Olivias father left all the costs to him. Again, he tried to broach the topic.
Alice, please, Im not trying to quarrel. But tell me, why doesnt your ex-husband pay anything for Olivia?
I dont want his money. Ive never asked for it.
Well, I think thats unfair. So a stranger is expected to pay for someone elses daughter while her own father feels he has no obligation whatsoever. Its absurd!
You call yourself a stranger? And I, silly, thought you considered Olivia family. I thought you were a decent man.
Dont accuse me. I could toss blame as well.
Thats your prerogative. But Ill never turn to my ex. Dont want to give me money? Fine. Ill earn it myself. We wont grovel before anyone. If youve had enough responsibility, perhaps were better off apart.
Why get so angry? Lets talk it through and decide.
Theres nothing to decide. Im going to bed. You can sleep here if you want. Im not in the mood to talk.
That night, John slept restlessly on the sofa, pondering their exchange. It became clear: Alices pride set her apart, and he was made to feel at odds with her daughter. He realised that as Olivia grew, so too would the problems and expenseswhile her father simply carried on, indifferent to the lot. One day, John discovered a photo of Alices ex-husband on her old laptopan expensive car, fine clothes. Clearly, the man wasnt hard up. He could have provided for his daughter if approached. The fault lay in Alices pride. So, John resolved to speak to the man himself.
