Alone at 40! A Mountain Escape Changed Everything!

Lonely at 40! A trip to the mountains changed everything.

I don’t usually complain, but I suppose the time has come when I need to express myself.

I am forty.

I have everything: a career, a flat, financial stability.

Yet when I celebrated my birthday in an empty apartment with a glass of wine, I realized that I truly had nothing.

No husband.

No children.

Not even a cat to greet me at the door.

A Decision That Changed Everything
That evening, I made a firm decision:

I needed to change something.

I took some time off and headed to the countryside to clear my mind.

I craved peace, fresh air, and nature.

But upon arrival, I discovered it was a getaway spot for couples in love!

An Untimely Meeting
Couples surrounded me everywhere.

People in love were holding hands, kissing, and laughing.

I sat alone in the corner of the restaurant, sipping tea and feeling utterly out of place.

But I wasn’t the only solitary person there.

At the other end of the room sat a man who seemed just as lost as I did.

Our eyes met by chance.

And it all began.

When Two Lonely Souls Meet
His name was Andrew.

He was 42.

Like me, he’d devoted his life to work and then realized he’d missed out on the most important things.

We talked for hours that evening.

About work.

About life.

About losses.

About the fear of time flying by and ending up with nothing.

The next day, we went for a hike together.

It felt like I had known him forever.

We laughed like children, threw snow at each other, and joked as if we were 20 again.

A Delayed Love
Those days in the hills became the happiest of my life.

We took walks, talked about everything, fell asleep in each other’s arms, and watched the sunrise.

For the first time, I felt what it was like to be not just strong, but also wanted.

I fell in love.

For the first time in years.

And so did he.

But as the holiday came to an end, I realized it was just an illusion.

The Bitter Truth
Before leaving, Andrew was silent for a long while.

Then he said:

“I can’t. I have a wife.”

My breath caught.

I froze.

I felt like I was about to wake up from a nightmare.

“You… didn’t say…” my voice betrayed me and trembled.

He turned away.

“I didn’t want to. I didn’t plan this… But you’ve changed me. I haven’t felt so alive in years.”

The Separation That Broke Me
He promised me nothing.

Spoke of no divorce.

Just stood there, watching me leave.

I left first.

Crying as I had never cried before.

I had lived in that fairy tale.

And now it was over.

His Last Call
A year passed.

I tried to forget.

Even started seeing another man.

But one day, a call from an unknown number turned my world upside down again.

It was his daughter.

“My father… He… He loved you very much. He couldn’t live without you.”

My heart stopped.

“What?..”

“He became ill. Lost his will to live… Before he died, he asked to tell you… that he regretted nothing.”

I dropped the phone.

The world spun.

He was gone.

And I wanted to scream.

What He Left Behind
I went back to those same hills.

Just to walk those paths once more.

To remember his smile once again.

To feel him near me again.

He left me memories.

He left me with the feeling that I was, indeed, loved.

Even if that love came late – it was still real.

And I will never forget it.
