After the baby was left on my doorstep, my life fell apart—I wasn’t ready for such a twist.
Once the adoptive child entered our lives, everything shifted, and sadly, not for the better.
Emily and her husband James were raising their eight-year-old daughter, Charlotte. Though their family seemed complete, the couple felt they had enough love and care to give to another child. They decided to adopt a boy from an orphanage despite warnings from relatives.
“My parents didn’t support the idea,” Emily recalls. “Mum kept saying, ‘Why take on someone else’s child? Who knows what genes or illnesses he might carry?’ But James and I were certain. We didn’t listen to anyone else.”
After months of paperwork, five-year-old Oliver joined their family. He was quiet and shy, but they believed they could surround him with warmth.
From the start, Emily and James chose not to tell Oliver he was adopted. They hoped time would erase his past, making him feel like a full member of the family.
But unsettling things began happening. One day, Emily found Charlotte’s favorite doll slashed with scissors.
“I was horrified,” she says. “Oliver just stood there, watching me silently. I asked why he’d done it, but he only shrugged.”
Emily consulted a child psychologist, who explained this behavior might stem from trauma at the orphanage, advising patience and extra love.
They tried, but things worsened. At nursery, Oliver told teachers his parents starved and punished him. Soon, social workers arrived at their home for an inspection.
“It was necessary,” Emily admits, “but humiliating. We gave our children everything—only to be accused of neglect.”
No wrongdoing was found, but the damage was done. James insisted on returning Oliver.
“I can’t live like this,” he told Emily. “He’s tearing us apart. Charlotte’s scared of him. I feel helpless.”
Emily was torn—between loyalty to James and duty to Oliver. She hoped things would improve, but Oliver only grew more aggressive, threatening them and Charlotte.
In the end, James couldn’t take it. He filed for divorce, giving Emily an ultimatum: return Oliver or lose him.
“It was the hardest choice I’ve ever made,” Emily confesses. “I loved my husband, but I couldn’t abandon Oliver.”
After the divorce, Emily was alone with two children. She tried balancing attention for Charlotte with Oliver’s needs, but the strain overwhelmed her. Constant stress led to a breakdown.
“I realized it couldn’t go on,” she says. “I couldn’t give Oliver the care he deserved.”
Heartbroken, Emily arranged for Oliver’s return to the orphanage. It hurt everyone, but she believed it was the only way.
“I hope he finds a family who can give him what I couldn’t,” she whispers, tears in her eyes.
Now, she focuses on raising Charlotte and mending her own shattered peace.
