As Katya Completed the Payment, Sergei Slipped Away — Just as She Started to Organise Her Groceries, He Departed; Upon Exiting the Shop, Katya Encountered Sergei Outside, Puffing on a Cigarette.

While Emily was paying at the till, William lingered by the door, detached. As she began packing the groceries into bags, he stepped outside completely. When Emily emerged from the shop, she found William smoking on the pavement, his breath mingling with the cold London air.

Will, take the bags, please she said, holding out two heavy grocery sacks.

William looked at her as if shed asked him to commit a crime, his eyebrows lifting in mock surprise.
And what about you?

Emily blinked. What did he mean, *what about you?* It was only natural for a man to help. It felt absurda woman struggling with heavy bags while her husband walked empty-handed, free as a bird.

Will, theyre heavy she insisted.
So? he shot back, unmoving.

He could see her frustration building, but on principle, he refused to carry them. He quickened his pace ahead, knowing she wouldnt catch up. *”Carry the bags? What am I, a bloody packhorse? Or some errand boy? Im a manI decide what I do. Let her manage. It wont kill her.”* Today, he felt like putting her in her place.

Will, where are you going? Take the bags! Emily called, her voice cracking.

The bags *were* heavyWilliam knew that. Hed been the one to overload the trolley. The flat wasnt far, just a five-minute walk. But weighed down, it felt endless.

Emily trudged home, fighting back tears. She half-expected him to turn around as a joke, but he didnthe only got farther away. Part of her wanted to drop everything right there, yet somehow, she kept going. When she finally reached their building, she slumped onto the bench in the entryway, exhausted. She wanted to scream, to cry, but she swallowed itweeping in public was embarrassing. Yet swallowing this indignity? No. He hadnt just slighted her. Hed humiliated her on purpose. And this was the man whod once been so attentive before they married. He knew *exactly* what he was doing.

Hello, Emily! A neighbours voice pulled her from her thoughts.
Hello, Mrs. Hughes she replied, forcing a smile.

Mrs. HughesEleanor Hugheslived one floor below and had been close to Emilys grandmother. After her gran passed, shed stepped in, helping however she could. Emily had no one elseher mother lived in another city with a new husband and kids, and her father had faded out of her life long ago. Mrs. Hughes was family now.

Without hesitation, Emily decided to give her the groceries. At least carrying them hadnt been pointless. Mrs. Hughes pension was meagre, and Emily loved to spoil her with little treats.

Come on, Mrs. Hughes, Ill help you up she said, hoisting the bags again.

In the neighbours kitchen, she left everything, insisting it was all for her. When Mrs. Hughes spotted the tinned salmon, the pâté, the peaches in syrupluxuries she adored but rarely boughther eyes welled up. Emily felt a pang of guilt for not doing this more often. They said goodbye with a kiss on the cheek, and Emily headed upstairs.

Inside the flat, William emerged from the kitchen, chewing.

Where are the bags? he asked, as if nothing had happened.
What bags? Emily mirrored his tone. The ones you helped me carry?
Oh, come off it! He tried to laugh it off. Youre not still cross?
No she said calmly. Just drawing conclusions.

William stiffened. Hed expected shouting, tears, an argument but this quiet resolve unsettled him.

What conclusions?
I dont have a husband she sighed. Thought Id married one, turns out I married a child.
Dont follow he feigned offense.
Whats not to follow? She met his gaze. I want a husband who acts like a man. And you, seems you want a wife who acts like one too. A pause. So what you really need is a husband.

Williams face flushed crimson, fists clenching. But Emily didnt seeshe was already in the bedroom, packing his things.

He fought it until the end. He didnt want to leave. How could something so small end a marriage?
It was fine! Whats the big deal about carrying bags alone? he protested as she flung his clothes into a suitcase.
Your suitcase Emily said, ignoring him. Hope you can carry *that* on your own.

She knew this was just the first warning. If she swallowed his disrespect, the humiliation would only grow. So she ended it, shutting the door in his face.
